Issue 121. "At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

Do human beings need to save endangered species at the expenses of extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs? The speaker believe there is no justification to do so .On balance, though the speaker’s notion has some merit ,I fundamentally tend to disagree with the speaker. In some extent, I think we human beings should try our best to save endangered species.
To begin with ,the causes of the extinction of many species have not to do with human beings’ activities. In the long historical period ,a great amount of species became extinct dut to the change of climate and geological conditions ,rather than human beings’ activities. For example ,the dinosour became extinct before human beings existed in the world.Actually ,there are many species emerge or disappear regardless of human beings’ activities. It is the result of natural selection and natural development in accordance with Darwin’s theory. In this point, the speaker’s notion that human beings don not need to make extraordinary efforts to save endangered species has some merit.
On the other hand,in the modern society ,human beings’ activities should be responsible for the deteriorating environment, mainly caused by pollution and over exploiting the natural resources, and serving as the main cause of the endangered species.During the last century, the world’s economic achieved a rapid progress at the expenses of cutting a great amount of forest, polluting nearly all the rivers and seas in the world, and seriously polluting the air of earth.Nowadays, many developing countries still develop by destroying the natural environment in the same way. Many species can not acclimatize themselves to the rapidly deteriorating environment, thus become extinct. In some sense,to take measure to save endangered species is to compensate our irresponsible activities.
The second argument ,and the one I find most compelling ,is that we human beings have the ability to save endangered species and we should save endangered species if we want to live in a balanced system. The society have developed rapidly and achieved many accomplishments since last century.Human beings,as the most advanced animals, have so many skills that we can dive into the deep sea, fly into the sky,and communicate with others in a long distance, and so forth. At the same time ,human beings have the ability to save endangered species by providing enough food for the extinct species and by offer a relatively better environment with less pollution ,using less efforts than before due to the advanced technology nowadays. Moreover,The endangered species are indispensable parts of a balanced ecological system .Therefore ,the extinction of these species might seriously destroy the ecological system and impose negative harms to the environment human lives, which in turn threaten the living of human beings.Basing on this argument, there is no doubt that we human beings should take actions to save endangered species.
To sum up,the causes of the extinction of many species are not necessarily due to human beings’ activities. However, since human beings have the technology to save endangered species without extraordinary efforts and endangered species are indispensable parts of a balanced ecological system,we should take measures to save endangered species. |
