We can appreaciate a multitude of artical works which are created by the greastest artists living in different periods of history. however,  not all the works we can see today are available to the artists' contempories, and not all of them are welcomed by their contempories because of some political factors. To protect the benifits of the ruling classes, most governors took all kinds of measures to limit people's freedom of speech, which may impair their images among the common citizens and exposure their state of governing to the danger of being derived. Therefore, it is a commonly true statement that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
Firstly,In a society where freedom of speech is not allowed, people have to take the form of art such as painting, music, literature to present their ideas about the society, which are against the ruling classes's interests. Otherwise, If they transfer their ideas through other public ways, they  are likly to be put into prison. For example, when Germen were controlled by Nazis, any person who said anything against Nazis were destiny to be sentenced to death. However, Piccasso, a great artist, worked out a famous painting named Dove to accuse Nazis with their crimes, he also appealed for a sense of struggling for peace through the painting. The painting revealed the hidden ideas of peace among common citizens all over the world in World War Two. Another example is black music, which oringiated at the time when America held slavory. Black music showed the willing of the blacks to abolish slavery.
Secondly, through arts, the ideas are more effectively presented and seem to be much more persuasive.  People usually prefer reading a novel rather than some rules set by government or other othorities. We all know a great saritist whose name was Mark Twains. His novels were not only popular among Americans at his period, but also had the majority of readers all around the world. Most of his stories commit a satire on the system of the election in American. In his novels, he aquainted us with various of people of all social classes. Hence, in the way of literature, the hidden ideas and umpulse against the election system are revealed to most  people.
However, there exist many other ways to reveal hidden ideas and umpulses. The persons who are not willing to confront to the power may chose the way of free speech. Martin Luthur King is a good model. His famous speech titled with I have a dream is still besides our ears till today. In this speech, he call for equall rights to all people, without regarding their race, sex and other distinctions from others. The speech showed the willingnees of all people with colors, and it acts an important role in the Act of Equalty in American history.
To summerize, to struggle with the ruling classes and to pretect people from beening put into prison, arts are needed to reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and umpulses of a society. even in a democratic, the arts will also play a very important role in revealing the crime of some evil groups, to present the ideas and impulses of the people who are not in the eyes of public.
