Issue36【desperado】
TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 397 17:09 2007-12-8
Outline:
The speaker asserts that "The greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries." In my view, the greatness of individuals can be recognized not only in restrospect by those who live after the person, but also can be decided by their contemporaries. In some fields, especially plitics, greatness is often decided in the early stages. But, in the other fields, such as biological technologies, greatness should be confirmed over time. In still other areas, e.g. economics , to identify greatness needs a short time or a long time, which depends on different cases.
We can easily recognize politic greatness-whether in war time, or in peaceful time.Because they lead people to fighting ageinst the enemies, such as the old society system and the natural disasters. History is full with examples of politic greatness immidiately recognized, then later conformed. President George Washington estabished the new freedom country-the United States-from the English's colony. Alberham Linclon abolished the slavery, owning the various races' respects. And Chairman Mao in China led the public to frighting the old system for the communism, giving the new birth to the oppressed people. Besides, the Secretary Deng Xiaoping, in 1980's, implemented the policy of reforming and opening, as a result in the fast economic developement. Every chinese thinks highly of his contribution.
However, in the technologies, it is not easy to define the value of greatness without the benefit of historical spective. The colone technology is now an arguable field. At present, it is difficult to draw a conclusion that it is good or bad for human beings. Therefore, we cannot evalute their notions about bio-technology to new scientific heights. As for the field of economicsmthe incubition period for greatness varies from case to case. On one hand, the mathematician John Nash'theorem "Nash equilibrium", who is the Nobel Prize holder, appoach to changing the attitudes of econimists towarding the economic development. Even he could not have predicted the impact his innovation could have the global economy and on the modern world. On the other hand, Microsoft's Bill Gates has made a great contribution, lifting American technology out of the doldrums during the 1970s to restore America to the status of economics power house and technological leader of the world. And this contribution is contribution is readily recognizable now-as it ishappening. Obviously, the DOS and Windows operating system, and even Gate's monopoly, might eventually become historical relics. Yet his greatness is already confirmed.
To sum up, the speaker fails to consider many great individuals, especially in the politics and in economics, whose contribution are highly honored as great even during their own time. Nevertheless, other great achievements, particularly scientific technologies, can be tested over before they can be confirmed.
