This argument suggests that in order to lower the rate of teenage crime in Alta, television viewers should demand that television programmers reduce the amount of violence programs shown during prime time. To support the view, this argument cites the information that since the television began to appear in home, the rate of teenage crimes begin to increase. Several national studies found more violent behavior in young children who watch television with violent scenes. And over 90 percent of the respondents are in favor of programs with less violence in prime-times. But close scrutiny of these facts may find that they are inadequate in supporting the suggestion.
The argument suggests there is logical connection between the crimes and television in the 1950's. But this is unconvincing, because the argument can not eliminate other factors that lead to the rise in teenager crimes. Maybe the violent scenes begin to appear popular life style of young people. Without television sets, teenagers are also exposed to violent scene or literature from movies, novels and music, etc. Therefore, without the control of other source, the problems are not easily solved.
The argument also cites the national studies that young children who watch a great number of television featuring violent scenes shows more violent behaviors. However, close scrutiny of these studies can give other possibilities. Maybe these young children are more violent before they have access to violent scenes on tv. The solution thus lies not in the television but the education of those children.
The argument also cites a survey that over 90 percent parents are in support of cutting violence programs in prime times. This survey may not be complete and convincing. As it fails to account for time of television programs that are favored by children. If the violent programs have bad effect on children, the cutting of prime time programs may not be effective in reducing their effect on young children as they can watch tv programs in other times. I can not help to guess that the prime time from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. is only the time that is favored by parents after a busy working day.
In conclusion, without considering these possibilities that mentioned above, the suggestions offered by the argument might be ineffective. We must study other reasons that lead to the increase of violence in young children. If the television really has great impact, we must also carefully study the solution to tailoring TV programs.
