TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
[Outline]:
The speaker asserts that everyone in society should obey just laws and resist unjust ones. Fundamentally, I agree with the speaker. However, based on some other reasons such as morality and individual freedom, it is hard to recognize a law just or unjust. And the line between them is blurred.
Admittedly, not only the responsibility is it for every individual to follow the laws, especially the just ones, but also the right to do it, since it helps keep our society well-balanced and stable and meanwhile protects individual rights away from being violated. One example is that if every person follows the restrictions of traffic, few traffic accidents will happen. [待展开:交通规则的意义] Another example is about taxes. The laws on taxes can balance the extent between the rich and the poor to some degree, protecting the rights of the poor. The government requires the taxes from the pockets of the men of wealth, helping the helpless and hapless live. Again, before the Civil War, the laws in the south of the America permitted the white farm owners to have the black people as their private slaves. Obviously, these laws, which not only maintained the privileges for white people, but titally vilated the human rights of black people, were unjust laws and must be resisted.
Moreover, it is also necessary for everyone to fight against the unjust laws. Because it ensures the justice and is good to improve the system of the laws. For instance, at the World War Two, Adolf Hitler implemented the law which is about butchering Jews. This law is based on his quirky notions and definitely unjust for the Jews. However, whether just or unjust, a law is rarely a straightforward issue considering the moral factors and the differences among the people. Take the morality for example, considering the one's benefit, sometimes people attempt to take some illegal activities for certain aims, for the benefit from the behaviors exceeds the lost, although they clearly that they break the law. On the other hand, the fairness of any law depends on one's personal value system. This is especially true when it comes to individual freedom. Consider, for instance, the controversial issue of abortion. Individuals with some particular religious beliefs are declined to view laws, which allow mothers an abortion choice as unjust, while individuals with other value systems might view such laws as just. In sum, to establish a better society with stable systems and improve the law system, every person should obey the just laws and fight against the unjust ones. In addition, as for some laws about controversial issues, it is hardly to define the laws just or unjust on the case to case basis.
