提纲：

学者和研究人员应该适当关注他们的工作是否对社会有贡献，也就是某种意义上的肯定，兴趣也很重要，所以要两者结合，达到一种平衡。学者和研究人员也是理性人，有自己选择的权利。
1、  研究的目的是什么？任何研究都是为了能够造福人类，这样的研究才有意义。对社会有贡献也就意味着社会对其会有肯定，包括继续资助其研究、给予其社会地位，自身能够得到满足。
2、  但是对是否对社会有贡献的过度关注会导致短视的结果。DDT的发现！
3、  兴趣是支撑学者和研究人员进行研究的另一动力，毕竟每个人都是理性人，都有满足自身需要和需求的欲望。同时也就意味着学者和研究人员本身要在两者之前做选择或者平衡，如能两者结合，当然最好。
4、  结论，需要平衡，需要社会去评价。

What scholars and researchers do is supposed to help human being make their life easier, which is most of people thinking about. They study and research, and should pay some attention on whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society, and gain some acknowledgement from the society and public. At the very same time, their individual interests are of great importance and should be combined to the attention to contribution issue, and therefore, can make a balance and a harmonious world.

What is all the researches' purpose? Or supposed to be? Obviously, people, including me, will say to benefit human being and the society, which makes researches significant. Scholars and researchers’ contribution to the society means that the society, on the other hand, places acknowledge and honor to them, which involves continuous sustentation fund, gives them social position, and also makes themselves satisfied. From this consideration, we hope them to be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society.

However, over concerning about the contribution issue can make a scholar or a researcher shortsighted, therefore lead them to a harmful result to the world or even a disaster. The best example is that DDT's invention, which was thought to be one of the most important inventions in that period and did helped people to prevent their plants from insect pest, is now deemed to be a tragedy to the eco-system's health throughout the world. Scientists found that DDT was transfered to Antarctica, where there were nearly no human activities, and is now making penguins in danger. Such examples are mournful and numerous. What I am trying to say is too much concern on contribution is not always a good thing to the world.

Since too much concern on the contribution sometimes make things worse, we need to allow scholars and researchers pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. Because, interests will at least not make things worse in most of the times, and they help researchers to steady their faith in certain fields, and therefore make the research more in-depth and useful. Another thing is that everyone is a rational man and has his basic need to fulfill his own purpose, and this is what interest can do, but not only concerning the contribution thing. However, things are much complex than we think, and still need the society and public to evaluate whether a research is worthy for, though sometimes it is delayed.

Anyway, we need a balance between the contribution concerning and individual interests when things come to research. Further more, we need to try our best to evaluate whether a research is worthy in a long term visual angle, and this will help to avoid unexpected lost.

我觉得你很会用连词,句子很流畅.
但是我鸡蛋里挑骨头,有点小问题:
开头和结尾陈述贡献与兴趣都重要,但文中似乎兴趣论述的少了些,好像论述的重心在贡献.论述贡献和兴趣的重心的篇幅也找个平衡可能好点,你觉得呢?欢迎提意见,呵呵~

Because, interests help researchers a lot to steady their faith in certain fields, and therefore make the research more in-depth and useful. Another thing is that everyone, including scholars and researchers, is a rational man and has his basic need to fulfill his own purpose and profit, and this is what interest can do. Letting researchers only concerning the contribution thing is just an ideal goal and not realistic. In addition, some researches, which seem to be useless or too unusual and idiosyncratic, can lead by researchers’ interests and result in a wonderful achievement in the future.
