Issue 107
The study of history is irrelevant to today’s problems.
Although nowadays every aspects of society has been changing dramatically from that of yesterday, these changes do not make the study of history completely irrelevant in terms of large social problems as well as everyday life
nowadays. The development and progress of today are based on the achievements of the past. Learning about history of the past benefits us in many aspects.
Change in every field is taking place in an unprecedented rate. The most conspicuous illustration of this statement is the invention and development of computers. Ever since the first computer was invented for military use in the U.S.A. scientists have been trying to add more new functions to computers and have made great success. Computers today can perform the function of calculating , designing , drawing ,painting and education and so forth. Meanwhile the size of computers decreased dramatically from the gigantic truck like machine to the one as small as a mirror which can be hold on one’s hand. The calculating speed of computers is another feature that changed rapidly, the work that used to take several years of many people to accomplish now can be done within only a few hours by computer. In accompany with the development of computers, the tool of information technology, the Internet develops at the same rate, if not more rapidly, bringing us numerous useful information. Comparison of what was like 100 years before with that of today would reveal how profoundly the world has changed. In medical field, many diseases that were considered uncurable have now become a routine as fever. In Astronomy, we can expect satellites rotating around the earth to be as small as a golf ball in the near future. All of this helps us aware that we live in an ever-changing world.
It is true that the study of history usually cannot provide direct solutions to present problems. The problems we face today are under radically different social environment with that of the past, that determines the nature and characteristic of today’s problems are also different from that of the past. Admittedly, there are problems that share some common characteristics with what has happened in the past, in this case, past experience provide guidance for us to solve these problems but not the direct solution to them. Other problems we face are totally new which have no precedence in the past, we have to rely entirely on our own intelligence and power. Even so, the past experience is not totally irrelevant, since people of different time and history share common characteristics. It is possible for us to liking solving social problems to solving mathematical problems. Usually, we can not find same problem in the reference book, but we get perspectives and ideas that give us inspiration to solve our own problems from it.
However, knowledge of history helps us understand the problems that puzzle us today. Historical experience tells us that wars and conflicts among countries of the world will definitely cause great harm to the world, resulting in great destructions to natural environment as well as human civility. Based on this fact, we are aware that the major tasks of us is maintaining a peace environment of the world, in which both economy and sciences can develop peacefully, thus contribute to the welfare of all human beings.
We can also learn to avoid repeating mistakes made by our predecessors. Progress in every field of study is based on analyzing the past mistakes and trying new approaches. As illustration, in the field of social reforms, numerous historical facts have proven that isolating one culture from the rest of the world can only lead to disaster to this culture as well as people living in it, it is necessary for every country to realize the trend of globalization, and make efforts to cooperate and communicate with other countries. In conclusion, Analyzing the past grave mistakes and clarify reasons help us find out the best ways that are most economical for today’s developments within a relatively short time, sparing time spending on groping and trying.
History performs the same function as mirror. It helps us understand clearly the human nature and direction of social development. Past experiences are valuable wealth left by our predecessors, playing the role of guidance for today’s developments. |
