"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."


Looking back our human being’s history, it is replete with stories about the glorious deeds of a few individuals. So it is never strange that the study of history places emphasis on individuals. However, we can not forget that it is all the human beings consist of the history rather than the few famous individuals. So we cannot deny the great power of the most ordinary people in the development of history.

Admittedly, historians have paid much attention on studying the few renowned individuals who played a pivotal role in significant historical developments. But it is not because they themselves made the important events and trend in history, but are the representative of the group people who make it. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi who was bestowed the title of Father of India, is a outstanding type of India people who fight for freedom. He succeeded in launching a mass movement of satyagraha and non-violence, on a condition of the sacrifices of the martyrs who adhered to his principles. To study that history of India, it is indispensable to make researches on Mahatma Gandhi and other chiefs of the revolution. It is the very reason that what Mahatma Gandhi pursued is what the India plebs desired for at the age that independence, self-determination, liberty and right. It is apparent that the huge amount of publicity available to the Father of India would ensure the mention of the name Mahatma Gandhi in history books for years. Hence, the emphasis of individual is due to the fact that these individuals voice the desirability of the most ordinary people.

The most significant events and trends in history were made possible by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. Since it is the masses who give an impetus to the progress of history. The effort of a few individuals is not sufficient to cause a paradigm shift in the history development. For instance, in many counties the national revolution is lead by a group of chiefs, but in contrast with the masses usually only the main leader is remembered by people,  such as Mao Zedong and other leaders and participates in Chinese revolution. Actually it is the groups’ great strength to defeat the invaders. Similarly, any scientific accomplishment is based on the accumulation of the former information and experiences, which many inventions have testified. While discussion about scientist Thomas Alva Edison with his great invention electric lamp, few people would advert to the precondition of the use of electric, which must mention one scientist Michael Faraday, the father of electrics, who discovered the phenomena of electromagnetic.  Numerous modern inventions, whose production contains multifarious former inventions and experience, come into being, and lead the achievement of science to groups rather than individuals, such as air plane, cell phone, computer, internet and so on. Hence, the most famous events and trends in history were possible due to group effort.

However, we cannot deny completely the power of individuals. It is worthwhile to mention that some ones did indeed make a great influence of the advance of history. For instance, some genius at physics create some theory that brought forth world wide impact, such as Isaac Newton and  Albert Einstein.

In conclusion, history is shaped by groups of people rather than few famous individuals, except some genius. Most famous individuals are widely mentioned in history not because of their power to made history trends, but their representations of groups of people. Although individuals were involved in history, it is the group effort to make the difference.
