TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 540          DATE: 2007-12-21 16:59:40

The speaker suggests that all faculties should spend time working out of the university in professional relevant areas in order to improve the quality of instruction. In my view, although the speaker may neglect the differences between faculty as well as overstate the advantages of outside work, on balance I tend to agree with the speaker that we should encourage faculty learning outside the academic world.

As common sense illustrates, the instruction at the college and university takes two major forms: teaching and researching. The primary reason why I agree with the speaker is that the faculties who are rich in social experience can extent the study areas and keep their research in a practical way. For example, in the realm of economic, there is a close relationship between fundamental research and social economic development. John Keynes, one of the most influential economists in the twentieth century, had been a lecturer in Cambridge University for almost 40years, during which he also worked as an advisor to the British financial department as well as the chairman of the World Bank commission. Plenty of social working experience provided him sufficient materials to support his study on economic theory, which made significant contribution to the macroeconomic research.

Moreover, a teacher who had been working outside the academic world could give more effective suggestions to the students for their future careers. Filled with curiosity and expectation, college students, who are in the period of transition from youth to adulthood, are more anxious to know the world outside the university. It is definitely necessary for the teachers to provide helpful information derived from their working experience to the students for guidance. I used to be confused with my major two years ago; it was not until a conversation with a teacher who also served as a consultant for the department of natural resources did I realize the value and responsibility of a scientist who works for the environmental protection. He told me about how a research report affects the government policy as well as how a correct policy would benefit the people who suffer from environmental pollution, all of which could never learn from the textbook and made me determined my mind to stick to my major.

On the other hand, spending too much time outside the academic realm may lead to the regression of their researching work. One can not make everything perfect within limited time. Working outside probably distracts the faculty's attention paid on the academic study, which should have done well firstly. In addition, some faculty are truly not suitable to work outside the university because they are not adept at dealing with personnel affairs, on the contrary, much better jobs can they do when facing pure scientific problems. It is more effective to leave them where they feel comfortable rather than force them to familiar a strange situation.

To sum up, in terms of enlarging the research area and supporting students with multiple knowledge rather than textbooks only, I agree with the speaker that faculty should spend time working outside the academic world. Nevertheless, since academic study can be weakened and not all the faculty are able to use the resources outside the university well, who should spend time working outside need to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
