9.The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

Merely based on questionable assumption and dubious evidence, the author claims that the procedure, evaluation of professors from students, should now be terminated in Omega University for it results in detrimental effect for Omega graduates to getting jobs. On the surface, the argument seems to be somewhat logical, however, this alone neither provides compelling evidence to make the argument sound nor organize a logical argument in favor of the conclusion.

First, it goes without saying whether the overall student grade averages in Omega University are higher than that  in  Alpha University or not. If grades is really higher than another university, it may be safe to infer that the average scores in Omega University are more inflated, then the conclusion may be achieved, for example, if the average in physics was 60 before the evaluation while 80 after it, but the average in the same subject has been always 90 in Alpha University, and thus the potential employers do not think the way as the author assumes. Therefore, without the grade statics of graduates from nearby Alpha University, the assumption that employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated is questionable and unfounded.

The second problem with this claim is that higher grade may be considered as the predominate reason for the less success in employment. Even if the students at Omega do not deserve the higher grades as is believed by the potential employers, it is unreasonable to allege that employers think them as incompetent workers only by their grades. The employers may give other standards to evaluate the comprehensive ability rather than consider the scores only.

The last thing I want to take a glance at this argument is that the author believes only the procedure is terminated can the better jobs for its graduates be secured. The new procedure may have many advantages, such as the supervising function to the professors and so on, hence, the dean at Omega University should take other measurements to secure and prompt better occupations.

To conclude, the reasoning is not persuasive as it stands, and the conclusion reached in the argument is in valid and misleading.
