TOPIC: ISSUE141 - "Most people recognize the benefits of individuality, but the fact is that personal economic success requires conformity."
WORDS: 494 DATE: 2008-1-1 1:27:13
I agree with the speaker that conformity is the prior condition of economic success, while the speaker unnecessarily extends the importance of conformity while ignoring certain advantages of individual behaviors that could be indispensable as well. Hence, I would be content that both individuality and conformity contribute to personal economic success and therefore one should strike a balance between them.
To begin with, the conformity is a fundament of specific division of labor, which would keep the production activities more effective. Common sense tells us that no one could be an expert in every field of work and it is truly that everyone has his or her strong point as well. Accordingly, the most effective way of producing is to put everyone in position where one can do what he or she is good at. For example, Henry ford, who introduced the moving assembly line to car manufacturing, not only won considerable benefits for himself and the company, but also reduced the cost of cars so that more people could afford it. It was a real economic success that developed the productive force besides earning money.
Moreover, the conformity can promote the exchange of commodities and meet the needs of different people, which would create a win-win situation to benefit everyone's personal economic interests. To put it simply, considering we are living in a society in which there is no conformity and everyone should do all such things as cultivate crops, build houses and make every little thing on one's own. Then, that would be so horrible that we could not enjoy the economic success because economic success is based on the advanced productivity and greatly enriched material, which could never happen without any corporation because no one could produce a car or a computer all by oneself. It is obviously that people could enjoy the economic success on condition that everyone provides others with what they need, in other word, conformity.
On the other hand, nonconformists are more likely to succeed in newer industries due to the restrains of established rules and principles within which the conformists have to do. For example, the risky investments are currently one of the most profitable industries which is affected by many unpredictable elements that one could probably reaps higher returns than a group. From this point of view, thanks to the fortuity of risky investment, compared with the decision that made through a regular process by conformists, nonconformists are more easily to make a quick decision and seize the chance in a short time. As a result, it is entirely possible for the nonconformists to earn more money than those who corporate with each other.
To sum up, conformity is the foundation of the development of social productivity, which brings economic success to people. Therefore, we should create more social wealth to meet the requirements for people through conformity. When it comes to some certain new industries, however, nonconformists tend to be more probably to succeed. |
