Under the situation of globalization, many countries require all the students to study the same national curriculum before they enter college rather than allow the school to determine what to teach to follow this trend. This is a good way to unify the nation. But cultural integration should be a natural and gradual process and we should evaluate the suggestion closely before a conclusion is made.
First of all, design and promote the same national curriculum for the whole nation will enhance national and racial integration. It will also help the people of the same country form a mutual cultural value. It is common that the ethnic minorities and the poor are vulnerable groups in a country. Sometimes their ideas are not accepted by the mainstream society and they often receive unfair treatment. By forcing all the students to study the same curriculum, it will make all the nations hold the same value. And such measures will lead to the reduction of the discrimination and misunderstanding between races, thus promote the centripetal and national cohesion of the nation.
On the hand, this suggestion may be impractical. For the countries with large population and various nations which may have their own languages, it will be difficult and cost a lot for the government to make a curriculum that is suitable for all nations just like China. China is a multi-nations country, and there are 56 nations there, it seems like a impossible mission for the local Ministry Education to make a curriculum that meet all the nation’s needs. And China is also a developing country, the government is not able to afford such a budget neither.
Another problem worth mentioning is that if the country forcibly requires all its students to study the same national curriculum until college and do not consider the characters of other nations, the result of this program will be horrible: it will lead to Contradictions and conflicts between nations and ethics. Every nation has theirs state of living, including their culture. Implementing a national curriculum without taking into account the characters of each nation will make a misunderstanding appear. What comes after it is the deepening ethic hatred and the conflicts between different nations, the whole country may be less stable. We will at last find that the result of this promoting is counterproductive, and it deviated the original target that enhance the integration of nations and form a mutual cultural value.
We have to realize that cultural integration is natural and gradual process. Any actions which want to haste this process will lead to the opposite result. We also should admit that the national curriculum benefits the national cohesion. The country should respect all the characters of the each nation and protect their relative independent cultural value and tradition while taking the promotion of the same national curriculum as a way to solidify the whole country.
