WORDS:668 HOUR: 1 DATE:2008-1-21
With the willing to protect the local environment, the author writes the letter to call for the residents of Clearview(C) to vote for Ann Green( AG), a member of the Good Earth Coalition, instead of Frank Braun(FB), a member of the C town council, in the next mayoral election. The reason why the author prompts this suggestion is that in his or her opinion, the current council takes no effort to protect the local environment based on a series of facts such as, the doubled factories’ number, the increased air pollution levels, and more number of patients with respiratory illnesses. Although, the author lists so many facts and persuade the local residents to vote for AG, from my point of view, it would not help AG win more votes for the letter suffers from many logical fallacies.
In the first place, as it well known to us all, a qualified major should not only have the willing to maintain a good environment for the health of the local residents but also have the capability to ensure the local safety, impel the economical and cultural prosperity of the town, provide a satisfied public service, and so forth. To cease the environmental pollution is only one part of the major’s task, therefore, the suggestion to choose a member of an environment coalition without checking whether he has meet the requirement to be a major is not a rational one.
In the second place, there is no evidence to show that AG has the capability to protect the local environment. A good willing to protect the environment does not guarantee the capability to do that well. To protect the environment, great efforts should be made like to establish related laws or regulations, however, the letter provide no information to convince me that AG has such ability.
In the third place, the facts the author listed lend little support to the conclusion that the current council does not protect the environment. To begin with, whether factories would cause pollution depends on many factors like the types of products and the measures to deal with the pollutants during the process of produce. Under such circumstance, the doubled number of factories does not necessarily result in more pollution. Also, numerous of factors contribute to the raised air pollution level, such as the pollution of the household or the influence of the global air pollution. In addition, the 25% more patients with respiratory illness are not a proof of the raised pollution, for the reasons caused this illness vary. Many factors can be responsible for respiratory illnesses besides air pollution, such as the gene heritance, smoking, and even aging. Without a specific investigation to eliminate other potential causes of the illnesses, it is unfair to draw the conclusion that pollution should be responsible for the increase number of patients with respiratory diseases.
Finally, no information shows that FB does not have an environment protection attitude. Firstly, the author’s assumption about FB’s attitude towards environment conclusion is totally based on the arbitrary conclusion that the current town council makes no efforts to protect local environment. Secondly, even it is true that the current council does not protect the environment; we can not say that FB does not care about the environment protection, because a group’s attitude can not stand for an individual’s attitude. There is quite a lot possibility that FB has the eagerness to protect environment, however, the number of members who hold the same opinion with him is relatively small in the town council and can not change the council’s policy.
In sum, to choose a major who can offer a better life of the local residents, many factors are needed to be considered besides the willing and the capability to solve environment problems. Hence, if the author want to persuade the residents in C to vote for AG, he or she need to provide sufficient information to prove that AG transcends FB in many aspects and is more capable to be the major. |
