80"All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science."
WORDS: 665 TIME : 1 hour DATE :2008-1-21
Do all students regardless of their different interests should be required to take coursed in the sciences? To answer the question, it is necessary to concern about the goal of education. In my opinion, the ultimately goal of education is to assure every students the equal opportunities to achieve individual accomplishment, hence, considering about that, I agree with the assertion if the scientific course are properly arranged.
In the society with high pacing science and technology, everyone enjoys the outcomes of the development of science and some basic knowledge of science has become a must in our daily life. With the basic knowledge of science, we can deal with many problems rationally and come up with the correct resolution. For example, if a person living in the north hemisphere is about to take a trip to Australia in Jan, with the basic knowledge of geography, he know what he should bring is summer cloth instead of winter ones. Basic scientific knowledge like this actually has become commonsense and leads us to make rational plan. On the contrary, a person without such basic knowledge will drop behind and even can not survive. It is hard to imagine a person without some basic knowledge of math can organize his or her financial plans well and lead an ordinary life.
Furthermore, the basic knowledge of science benefits students’ future career no matter what realm they choose to work in. It is an undeniable fact that every subject is related to each other at some level; therefore, if one wants to achieve success in one realm one must obtain the related knowledge as well. Basic knowledge of science is related to near every subject such as, sociology, art, politic and even singing. Skimming the human history, we can find that science use to be a branch subject of philosophy. Aristotle, who is considered as the greatest philosopher in ancient time, devoted much of his time doing experiments in order to give better explanations to human’s mental world. In modern time, with the enrichment of knowledge, the co-relationship between science and other subjects has become closer and the development of science largely impels many subjects’ prosperity. The development of physics makes us better understand the natural characteristics of light, and also promotes the birth of “impressionism” of painting. The improvement of astronomy inspires people’s imagination about the outer space and impels literatures to write a series of excellent scientific fictions like “star war”. The method used in study of science like the principle of random and comparison of controlled group has long been applied in the study of sociology and psychology. Innumerate facts illustrate the significant role that science play in many realms, under this condition, the requirement to call for all students to take course in science can better prepare them to explore in their future realm.
However, for students whose profession is non-science, to distill them with too much scientific knowledge is not necessary and sometimes may even impede their learning of professional knowledge. In the first place, given the limited time and energy, time which should be spent on the learning of professional knowledge is depleted by the study of scientific knowledge. In the second place, for students majored in art or literature, learning too much scientific knowledge and logical thinking may restrict their minds and deprive their ability of imagination which is crucial for the creation of art and literature. If Kafka always remembered that the real person could not change into bugs, I highly doubt that whether we can still read the excellent novels of him.
In sum, to achieve the goal of education, requiring all students to take science courses is indispensable; however, to avert the by-products, schools should provide a wide range of science courses to meet the demand of different students. For those interested in science, the course should include the profound knowledge of science. While for those interested in other realm, an easy course aimed to introduce science is more appropriate.
