TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."
WORDS: 579(改后666)          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2008-1-22 9:05:45

Definitely, I will raise my hands up when facing with the speaker's implicit assertion than intellect is much indispensable in tremendously high technology advanced society; however, disagreement with the prediction that more emphasis is demanded to place on the intellect nowadays inevitably follows. From my personal angle, the health development of both the individual and the society calls a balance between the intellect and non-intellect factors.

Naturally, the emphasis on intellect including reasoning and other cognitive skills is beneficial to people. First, a myriad of choice being offered, the intellectual individual will be able to choose the promising one resting on his intellect. Further, intellect also helps to oppress or temper the evil instincts of human beings to prevent high crime rate or similar undesirable consequences. As is universally acknowledged, people with qualified intellect will predictably gain much success when they are students, especially when they are at high school or university. For the simple reason that sitting in the classroom and dealing with elusive theoretical questions involves intellect than any other else. Based on above discussion, we can further infer that society without individual's intellect can never advance even a single step as the society is composed with thousands of millions of individual.

Nevertheless, the emphasis on the intellect has already reached a tremendously high level. And examples of this phenomenon never fail to present themselves. With respect to the field of education, there is no difficulty for us recalling the memories of our own for most of us have experienced it already. Also, as we know, after the Soviet had launched its satellite, public required education reforms in America. Since then, Science, Math, Language, which are considered as involving intellectual abilities are regarded as the most import curriculums in high school. The foregoing example of education reform illustrates the point that much emphasis have already been imposed on. After these students graduate, when hunting jobs as a career, they will be asked to display their outstanding intellect if they are pursuing a decent salary. Common sense tells us that people who take brainwork earn much more than those taking physical ones. Consequently, people will go out of their way to develop intellect with persistent effort.

When turning to non-intellect abilities, it is totally the opposite side of picture. And it is human beings who are doomed to suffer from the outcome. Students are asked to participate in several kinds of training class-such as chess class, Olympic math class and so forth- in hopes of enhancing their intellect. On the other hand, their inborn affection requirements are neglected deliberately. Most college students at 13-16 years old in China, without any doubt with highest intellect, either become incompatible with the society or even lack the capability to take care of themselves. Workers, especially brainworkers, increasing pressures from heavy work and supervisors nearly drive them crazy. With the absence of emotional care, such as sympathy, there is no wonder that the number of people commit suicide is high-rocketing.

It is non-intellect factors rather intellect ones that are in shortage of sufficient emphasis. And without enough emphasis on non-intellect factors, seldom can the individuals as well as the society avoid to be deteriorated.

Further, another compelling argument in favor of emphasis on non-intellect factors originated from Psychological researches concerning with intellect. The famous Harvard scholar with the name Gardner raised the theory of multiple intelligences. This can be viewed as a breakthrough of in the field of intellect theories; for it is the first time professor has believe musical-rhythmic intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, interpersonal intelligence and so forth belongs to intellect. This tendency in academic area reminds us of a growing awareness of the importance of non-intellect factors appears.

To sum up, significance of both intellect and non-intellect factors should not be ignored for they both plays an important and necessary part in our society. To be better developed, individuals and society should establish a balanced relationship between the two, on which the society depends on to boost itself.
