题目:ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the author concludes that as a result of domestic cheddar cheeses are increasing sharply and getting preference from subscribers speedily they should discontinue stocking many of imported cheese and concentrate primary on domestic cheeses sales to promote their business' profits completely. To broader this assumption, the author provides evidence that last year five best-selling cheeses at their newest stores were all domestic cheddar cheeses. In addition, recent survey's result from magazine can indicates people's preference. However, I find this argument suffers several critical fallacies as it stands.
Firstly, sales condition based on just several newest stores cannot necessarily indicate that situation about domestic cheddar cheeses among wholly country. For instance, perhaps current price impacting as a possible reason lead to inflation or devaluation of various food products, so many people choose relative cheaper type of food. Or perhaps, the newest stores have been holding some new lower-price policy to promote more and more patrons to consume in the chain of stores. Lacking evidence that several best-selling cheeses are all products of domestic cheeses, the author cannot persuade me on the basis of conclusion that vast majority of people in the nation more prefer domestic cheeses to imported cheeses.
Secondly, the author provides no specific evidence and data of this survey cites in this argument excerpt. Lacking sufficiently representative evidence of this survey, it is wholly possible that this result tendency from the survey cannot truly reflect the genuine condition in local people's taste. Or perhaps this recent survey has been ineffective on this district due to different people distribution. In short, without eliminating and considering those and any other possible reasons that the result of the survey, I will not to convince that the result is a real reflection of general tendency, let alone it will be applied specifically on local district.
Last but not least, even assuming that selling domestic cheeses will improve profits in all of our stores, it is nevertheless impossible to assess the author's contention that discontinue stocking variety of imported cheeses. The author might overlook other possibilities that might have served to attain their company's goal. Since the article fails to account for this explanation, the author cannot make any sound recommendation to cut or discontinue providing many of imported cheese for concentrate selling domestic cheeses.
In sum, the author fails to establish causal relationship between domestic cheeses and imported cheeses selling condition. To strengthen the argument, the author would have to provide evidence that local people truly favor taste on which type of cheeses. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more specific information about how will carry on this new policy that discontinue stocking imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.
