TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 439 TIME: 130min
The culture of a certain people, established and promoted throughout its own history, in some respects determines the behaviour of its citizens, and by carefully observing of these behaviours we are capable of outlining the people's common attitudes and way of thought. In other respects, however, the appearance as well as the behaviour tells little about the culture since countries share some identical international principles in some spheres.
Derived from the ancient convention, culture nowadays inherits some essential parts from our forebears' attitude and thought, and in return contributes to shaping our behaviours and lives. The development of clothing is such an example. In those ethnics featured by excellent riding skill and spasmodic migration for grazing, everyday clothes are found loose and fat due to the convenience for riding. Since their ancestors discovered long before that tight clothing may result in uncomfort and distracting during the war, clothes were improved gradually to a looser way. Although people in contemporary society undergo fewer and fewer warfare, this style of clothes remains preserved and acts as characteristic presentation of those nomadic people, and that accounts for the effortlessness when distinguishing Mongol and Persian in art work as well as in daily life.
Moreover, after careful scrutiny over history especially of the modern period, we may find some concurrence that the change in way of lives goes hand in hand with the change in society. This is because the cultural transform is reflected specifically in everyday lives and thoughts which eventually result in converting of society. For instance, when Japan undergoes significant industrial revolution, western-styled manners as well as clothing became irreversibly popularized and even dominated the way of their lives. Meanwhile, far outpaced by the fashion of western-style, the traditional clothing and artistic patterns faced the crisis of being eliminated. This profound transform in Japanese culture also led to the renew in people's attitude which was influenced heavily by the western thoughts.
Nevertheless, since the pervasive trend of globalization, some fields of our lives have been uniformed and homogenized to an identical and general manner. As a result, behaviour as well as the appearance becomes too similar to recognize the difference. Shaking hands with cooperator is a universal method to show respect in business, and its worldwide popularization results in the absence of presentation of ethnical and cultural characters. Accordingly, wearing western-styled clothes nowadays just show the formality in some certain situations, and the uniforms only reveals people's profession and identity.
In conclusion, when grasping general knowledge of a people, the appearance and behavior at first glance help us significantly. But we need further identification if details about this people are needed.
