Argument97 .The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.
"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."
WORD: 371 TIME: ONE HOUR
In the memo, the manager of television station KICK recommends that KICK should revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage. To support his recommendation, the manager cites a nationwide survey which reveals that majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television, and television station WACK, whose share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled after increased its sport broadcast, as evidences. However, I find the recommendation relies on illogical evidences, which make it unconvinced.
First, the nationwide survey is little indication that in the viewing area of KICK, majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. It is entirely possible that the viewing area of KICK limits in some big cities or beyond the nation, in this case, the result of the survey can not stand for the audiences attracted by KICK.
Even though the viewing area of KICK is nationwide, and majority of men would like to see more sports broadcast in fact, the manager’s suggestion to follow the way of WACK is lacking consideration. Firstly, the viewing area of WACK may be different from KICK. Secondly, the audience that WACK attracted may be different from KICK. In both cases, if KICK follow the way of WACK, it is hard for it to gain a larger audience share in its area.
Assuming the situation of KIAK is almost the same as WACK, accomplish recommendation is risk as the manager dose not take the competition that KICK may face after increase its sport broadcast. Perhaps, there are already several television stations added their sport broadcast, and their programs have attracted a group of fixed audience, especially those are famous for their sport program. In addition, if KICK cancelled some of his famous programs giving place to poor sport broadcasts, the audience share in its area was likely to decline, not to mention company profits.
In sum, the recommendation is unconvincing as it does not rely on sound evidence. To enforce its persuasion, the manager should provide more details about KICK and WACK and analyze the situation that KICK may confront. And to better evaluate this argument, I need to know how KICK will revise its broadcast schedule actually.
