I concede the speaker’s assertion that an individual would drive for innovation. Many famous people innovate by their hard study and the spirit of striving, however, the speaker overlooks the synergistic relationship between the effort of individual and teamwork, particularly with respect to modern society.

Admittedly, an individual always play an important role in innovation, which I can not deny. Many geniuses show their ability and talents when they are young, and then they achieve great attainments. To illustrate this point evidently, here is an example in point that very compelling. The Microsoft’s chairman Bill Gates started to program when he was thirteen and then developed Windows operational system to replace DOS. No one can disavow that Bill Gates is a genius. He founded Microsoft Company and became the richest man in the world. Without his contribution to personal computer (PC), people would not enjoy movies and games with PC and the world would be lacking for effective. In other words, some genius, indeed, are the impetus for innovation.

However, although individual would play a vital role in innovation, lots of work and studies which are researched by forefathers must be the premise. Without the work by forefathers, society cannot progress so rapidly. Isaac Newton said:” If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants.” From this sentence, we can see that the great attainments are achieved by the genius and the forefathers who already did much work and study rather than an individual. The wisdom of individual is limited, but many people’s wisdoms are infinite. The people, even are geniuses, also summarize and gather many useful information from other people. Thus, in my view, it is hard to succeed only by the effort of an individual.

Furthermore, especially in the modern society, people emphasize teamwork than individual ability. Society and science have evolved to a complicated and sophisticated one so that it hard to comprehend and controlled by individual person. The better way is emphasize the cooperation between people. One person would think something in only way, but five people would have five ideas; that is why we emphasize the teamwork. Here is an example about Bell Lab which is the cradle of C language and UNIX operation system. The team in Bell Lab worked together and overcame many difficulties, and finally they succeeded. Can I say the attainment belongs to some individual one of Bell Lab? The success belongs to everyone in the team since they did work together and cooperated to face the difficulties then solved them. It is that spirit of collaboration that the team succeeded finally. Thus, in my view, teamwork also plays a very important role in the innovation, especially in the modern research.

To sum up, I agree that individual is very important to innovation since every unit integrate to build up a whole team. However, when it comes to modern society and science, the cooperation and teamwork are more important. And in a better way, teamwork and individual enterprise can operate synergistically to bring out innovation.
