Technology, which has brought us so much convenience and changed our world, is always playing a positive role in our modern life? Considering Fritz Haber’s life and many other examples, my answer is negative. Fritz Haber, a German chemist, the winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry of 1918, received plenty of applauds for his invention of formation of ammonia, which accelerates the development of agriculture. However, he also received critique for his work on poison gas in World War I, which also causes the suicide of his wife. No one can deny that, science and technology has played irreplaceable role in the development of our society, and to a large extent, our convenient and influent modern life is built upon modern science and technology. But Haber’s experience is one of the best footnotes of the following opinion, that science and technology is a double-edged sword, it can either positive or negative, which depends on which way we handle it.

It is no doubt that modern life cannot exist without the highly developed technology. Technology brings us vehicles, radios, televisions, computers and Internet. Without cars and planes, we cannot travel or deliver goods so fast and massive, let alone the division of work in the global scope; without radios and televisions, the news cannot be spread so far and wide, let alone the fireside chats of Roosevelt; without the computer and Internet, we cannot transmit and deal with information so fast, let alone the concept of  “global village”. Not only those which seems “modern” aspects like information or aerial industry, but also these elementary businesses, such as agriculture and medicine, which had already existed and developed long before the appearance of science and technology (of modern definition), cannot continue to offer productions or services without the help of technology. Without the new pieces of rice which are got from cross-fertilization or gene engineering, we can hardly feed so many people on the earth; without the antibiotics, many diseases cannot be cured still. Thanks to the technology, we cannot live so long and so comfort. Science and technology are already the indispensable part of our life.

However, technology is not always playing an active and effective role in social or economic function. For example, the by-production of technology, the pollution, which has to be cleared for the environment protect and the people’s health, is becoming a problem which may lug the step of economic. Besides the advantages brought by science and technology, they also causes many problems. It is obvious that science and technology themselves are neutral. The affects of them depend on how we use them. The cloning technology is a typical case. As the development of bio-tech, human cloning is no longer just the fiction of scientists. Many people agree with the therapeutic cloning which can rescue many patients' lives; meanwhile, the reproductive cloning of human is forbidden by most of the countries, because it will take great, maybe fatal, impacts on ethics of our society.

Science and technology are the great tools by which we could change the world, but it does not mean that we could put them upon our moral and value view. The thought that since science and technology may resolve every problem, they could overtop other interpretations of life is wrong.
Although the scope of science is infinite, the act of scientists should be limited. We should pass laws or make other regulation in order to avoid the negative effect of technology.
