ARGUMENT51
“Doctors have long suspected secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary result of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment.

The author draw the conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To justify this conclusion, the speaker point out that doctor proved the secondary infections will keep some severe muscle strain patients from healing quickly by two groups of patients are treated by different doctors which have the different time of recuperation. However, the speaker relies on a number of doubtful assumptions and is therefore unconvincing.
First of all, the author assumes that the secondary infection may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. Nevertheless, this is not necessarily the case. Because there is no evidence to show that weather the severe muscle strain will definitely lead to the secondary infection or this kind of patients was really easy to get the secondary infection.
In the second place, even if these patients are easy to get the secondary infection, in claming that the muscle strain patients need to take antibiotics in their treatment the speaker cites a grouping study. However, the author proved no evidence to substantiate this assumption. There is no any statistics about the age, sex or other character of physiology of these patients who are grouping in this study at all. It is entirely possible that the patients of the group who were taken the antibiotics were younger than the other group’s. Or perhaps, they have a good physiological function themselves while the other group of patients was less than them. If this is the case, this study can’t show that the severe muscle strain patients whose recuperation time was not reduced by other facts but antibiotics. Furthermore, the differences of experience and medical level of doctors will also affect their recuperation time. Generally, the doctor who specializes in sports medical will understand the muscle problems more than general physician. It is possible that the patient whose recuperation time was reduced by using an efficiency treatment of the doctor, or the doctor has a high level of treatment than the other. Hence, the study will not prove that the antibiotics are the key for sooner recuperation.
Finally, even if there is no relation with the doctor’s experience or level, in asserting that the study is helping ensure the conclusion is efficient, the author overlooks the influence of sugar pills on these patients. There is no evidence to show that sugar pills don’t have any affection on the patients. If sugar pills have any affection on the patients, then, the study will not show that antibiotics are related to reduce of recuperation time. The author suggest that all patients need to take antibiotics in their treatment just based on the reason that secondary infection will hindered the recuperation time of patients. Nonetheless, the antibiotics may also bring some other problems besides disinfection. Such as, side-effects, or maybe some patients are sensitive to antibiotics. Therefore, doctors should have to take different treatment by considering the individual difference of patients.
In sum, the conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain need to take antibiotics as part of their treatment is not well supported. To convince me, the author must provide clear statistics that the probabilities of the severe muscle strain patients who suffered from the secondary infection. And proved a report that the antibiotics will reduce the recuperation time of patients based on the same doctors, same symptoms, same physiologies and same way to treatment.
