TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
WORDS: 498 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-2-4 下午 09:11:12
Dose a brilliant leader should maintain the highest ethical and moral principles as the speaker contends? Though I concede, sometimes, it cannot simply judge a leader only by this standard, in most cases, in my observation they are supposed to be upright and honest to the public.
To begin with, a leader who does not follow the principle of ethic may easily trap into crisis. For supporting examples, one should look no further than Nixon, who abdicate the presidency for the Watergate scandal, and became the first resignation of a president in the American history. Both Nixon and twenty five members of his administration are involved in the Watergate case, which ultimately be disclosed by the burglar in the event. The event immensely focuses people on the ethical and moral issue. Even if Nixon won in the president campaign again, hardly can he continue to fulfill his responsibility due to the mighty pressure from mass media and individuals alike. Accordingly, if a leader dose not follow the ethical standards, he may lost what he obtain, not mention to attain remarkable achievement.
In addition, the leader should maintain the ethical and moral standards so that they will ensure the stability of the organization or its members. A case in point is the Enron scandal, which draw a tremendous citizens' attention in 2001. Enron, an energy corporation billed by Fortune magazine as "American most innovative corporation" in straight six years, suddenly bankrupt, causing thousands of people lost their jobs and savings. Yet before the bankruptcy, there is no signal about the collapse, but the increasing growth of the stake. That means, however, Enron has been hiding its losses of profits under the observation of public, and constantly make fraud. The leader of the corporation is definitely responsible for the collapse. If the leader is one of honesty and integrity, and has not lost the compass of the ethic, they(前面用one 和 has,这里用they不太对应吧) should adopt just measures to remedy the hole, and may be the crisis can be averted.
Indeed, we could sometimes by no means evaluate the success and the contribution only by the ethical and moral principle. Consider, for example, the president of all nations, who is standing upon the interest of its nation and its people. Different countries may vie for precious resources in the earth, gasoline, coal, and the like. Hence, they may deal with quite a few events base on this interest, not just follow the ethical and moral standards. It is unquestionably that contradiction and conflict may among many countries. Encountering those formidable problems, a president might temporarily ignore its own moral principal and fight for the right of its nation and people. Consequently, in such cases, the effective leader cannot follow the ethical and moral standards, to some extent.
In conclusion, ethical and moral standards play a vital role in the society, upon which the world strike in a balance. In most cases, an eminent should undeniably follow the standards, while they may not obey the principle under some circumstance.
