The speaker claims that reading book is not as important as it once was as people can learn much by watching television as they can by reading books. Is that true? In my observation, I agree with the assertion partly, however, the habit of reading book won’t instead by the television nowadays in my eyes, otherwise, reading book still as important as it once was. But the final judge should depend on a case-by-case analysis as follows.

Why I would hold this observation –the habit of reading book still as important as it once was? Because books have some advantages that can not replacing by watching television.

The first has to do with the reason is so great quantity of book in the book store that we have much time and much more choice to choose our favorite and interesting books, we are initiative when we choose the books . On the contrary, we have not the convenient right to choose the suitable time and content when we watching television, if the program we intent to enjoy missed by chance we can do nothing but wait for another time or have to watching another programs that may be appealing us. That is mean we are passive because we have to receive these programs.

Secondly, when it comes to the merit of protect our visual power, no one yet can deny that watching television too long time would harmful to our eyes. However, reading book won’t bring about asthenopia. You can stop what ever you want and don’t worries the content disappear just like the programs in the television. Moreover, reading book would be more relaxing and breezily for we can have a suspension or take a rest what ever we like if we get tired, at the same time can protect our visual power.

The last but not the least, books can be more convenient to take along with people when we go out; we can read books at park, at coffeehouse, or even in the bus when we go home. In short, we can receive knowledge whatever place and time, compare with this point, television could not accomplish these work, only we can watching television just in suitable time and fixative place.

However, admittedly, television gives us an option to traditional education through reading and classroom teaching. The images in the television indeed more vivid than book, and the vivid images and colorful pictures would helpful to the children who are much more incline to accept visual information than abstract letters or characters. Furthermore; television also raise our consciousness by providing the latest news and discoveries, extending our horizon by such documentary programs as “National Geographic” and “Discovery”, whose contents might otherwise unapproachable in an entire lifetime or just reading such natural science literature for their dry and monotonous. Despite all these advantages, in addition, nothing the television can support for us, watching television can neither provoke abstract thinking nor can it teach effective management and adequate control of written language. Even watching television tends to overemphasize machinery, ignoring humanity.

In sum, thus the development contemporary technology supporting masses of method such as watching television to receive knowledge, and indeed television has become an integral part of our daily lives, Yet the role that books play is still irreplaceable and merits further avocations. In the final judge watching television and reading book can not replace by each other, what we need to do is to strike a balance between them.
