ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
最后两段虎头蛇尾,求高人指教
不同意原题,认为something of lasting value 需要artists and critics 两者缺一不可
1, 的确是artists创造了something of lasting value
a) Something of lasting value 是那些能bring lasting impacts on society的东西
b) 因为这些东西unique and original
c) Artists 创造了他们,是the basis of appreciation and comment
2, 但是a great work 不能离开critics
a) 读者是在进行再创作
b) 读者将好的作品挑出来
3, 但是critics不能求全责备,否则反而会阻碍艺术
Who gives society something of lasting value, artist or critic? The speaker asserts that it is the former who is really important while the latter is dispensable. However, I cannot agree with the speaker for he or she overlooks the value of the critics. In my view, the relations between(among?) artists, critics and the great works are just like the ones between(among?) nature, human and the diamonds: the artists create great works as the nature creates diamonds and the critics discovery the value as the mineworkers and craftsmen dig and incise the diamonds. So something of lasting value needs the association of both the artist and the critic, instead of either one.
One the one hand, no one will deny it is the artists who create these "something of lasting value”. To begin the discussion, it is necessary to clarify definitions of “something of lasting value”. In my opinion, it is something that will bring lasting impacts on the value of our society, like Shakespeare’s “ Romeo and Juliet “,which makes people discuss about the love and revenge for centuries, or the Amines Cathedral, which is the representation of Gothic build and has been referenced by the followers. The reason why these great works could bring us the unique lasting value is that they have originally caught the tide of the society with the artists’ lofty skills and great inspirations. These artists bring us paintings, music, novels and the like, which exert the value systems of a society. Many artists have created immortal works, such as Beethoven’s symphonies and Van Gogh’s paintings. They are the basement for people to appreciate and for critics to evaluate.
On the other hand, the evaluation of critics is a necessary part of the forming of a great work. Critics, who evaluate the works of art, should not be limited narrowly in the scope of professional reviewers, but should also include these common people who appreciate the works of art and have the ability to make their own comments. “There are one thousand Hamlets through one thousand persons’ eyes.” The process of reading, listening or watching the work of art is not only a process of receiving, but also of recreating. These comments have enlarged the value of these works. It is these readers, listeners or observers who give the works of art values along with the artists. So comparing with the artists, the critics are not someone who are inessential but are equally necessary ones. For example, the listeners of a concert are one kind of critics, without their appreciations, the composer and the music can never be famous, let alone brings lasting value to the society. Besides, it is the critics who pick out the really great works from the numerous common works and make them known. And when the entire beauty of great art works is indirect to people, like some novels full of metaphor by James Joyce, we often needs critics to help people to understand them.
However, the evaluations from critics may take adverse effects to the art work. Their feedback may be somewhat out of the true condition. For example, at the beginning, nearly all the comments to the pop art were negative; however time has proved that the pop art is the dispensable part of the modern arts, and has reflected somewhat the values of our society. Frank A. Clark said, “Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots. “ When we make comments, we should remember to be genuine and cautious.
To sum up, both artists and critics contribute a lot to the art works and make them owning lasting value. Neither of them can be absent in this process. Artists and critics should supplement each other.
