180.The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee-a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

In this argument, the director recommends that the Acme Publishing Company should requiring all of the employees to take the Easy Read Course since it would bring much benefit to the company. However, there are some problems in this argument.

To begin with, the director points out that someone’s speed of reading is fast and someone gets promotion after they take the course and then asserts that the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb, but do not provide any evidence to support it. There would be many other factors would lead to this result. It is entirely possible that the graduate can read 500 pages before he or she takes the course and perhaps another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president through his own effort rather than by the course. Another problem is that the more important thing is memorize and can exert the information rather than just read them. Reading fast does not represent for someone can master more information to deal with something. If the director does not consider these factors which would influence the result of taking this course, the conclusion is unacceptable.

Secondly, even if graduates could get some advancements through this course, the director’s assertion is unwarranted, which points out that 500 per employee is a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Although employees could improve the ability of themselves by taking the course, the company may not get more benefits. Perhaps the employees consider that they could do more and better things after take this course, and then they would require more salaries or even want to go to another company to buck for better career. In this way, Acme Publishing Company would lose much money to foster these employees rather than get much benefit through the Easy Read Course.

Thirdly, even though the employees would still work for Acme Company and do not require higher salaries, the director’s proposition still lack for evidences, which asserts that Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of the employees to take the Easy Road Course. It is not necessary to ask all the employees to take this course since many jobs do not require the fast speed of reading. Such as the waiter or the cleaner in this company, fast reading speed is meaningless to them, because the more important thing to them is service people and clean the floor, which do not require the speed of reading. In the scenario, the Acme Company does not necessary to require all of the employees to take the course, and if the company does that, it would waste much money of the Acme Company.

To sum up, the director’s recommendation is not well supported. To strength it the director must provide more evidence to support that the graduates would really get progression by the course and they would still work for Acme Company and do not require higher salaries. And the company should select some of the employees to take this course rather than all of them. It would be necessarily for the director to consider these scenarios before we could better evaluate the recommendation.

In this argument, the director recommends that the Acme Publishing Company should requiring all of the employees to take the Easy Read Course since it would bring much benefit to the company. However, there are some problems in this argument.

To begin with, the director points out that someone’s speed of reading is fast and someone gets promotion after they take the course and
then asserts that the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb,我认为原文并非是从这两个员工的例子,推导出了阅读速度越快,吸收信息就越多,我觉得两个毕业生的例子是为了证明参加这个课程确实有效果 but do not provide any evidence to support it.

这段攻击了两个员工的例子,和速度越快,吸收信息越多这两个方面。
但是我觉得,从两个员工的例子,应该能从数量太少,不足以说明该课程有用,来攻击。
Secondly, even if graduates could get some advancements through this course, the director’s assertion is unwarranted, which points out that 500 per employee is a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Perhaps the employees consider that they could do more and better things after take this course, and then they would require more salaries or even want to go to another company to buck for better career.这点反驳得蛮巧的~呵呵·In this way, Acme Publishing Company would lose much money to foster these employees rather than get much benefit through the Easy Read Course.
攻击了即便课程有用,但不一定会提高效益Thirdly, even though the employees would still work for Acme Company and do not require higher salaries,上段好像说的是不一定会提高收益,那么此处的让步就和上段不一致了the director’s proposition still lack for evidences, which asserts that Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of the employees to take the Easy Road Course. It is not necessary to ask all the employees to take this course since many jobs do not require the fast speed of reading. Such as the waiter or the cleaner in this company, fast reading speed is meaningless to them, because the more important thing to them is service people and clean the floor, which do not require the speed of reading.
