According to the speaker, one can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. I fundamentally agree with the assertion that the way people look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests. Since different societies have different rules, we might sometimes misunderstand the value of a society.

To begin with, people’s appearances and behaviors to some extent reflect the society’s value and ideas. A society in which facelift are popular among ladies and whose members like traveling around the world is possibly a society with relatively high living standard. A society with people enjoying fashionable clothes is one in which the modernization valued over the tradition. A society whose members behave in a gentle way is a civilized one. At this extent, one can tell much about the society by observation.

However, people are born different. A society consituted of different individuals might present a variety of otherness. What is more, different nations in the same society may act in different ways even if they have the same value and idea. China is a case in point. As is known to all, China has as many as 56 nations, most of which has its own custom and rules, dress in its style of clothes. However, these nations exist in the same society peacefully, with the same values. At this point, it might take a long time and great efforts to tell something about a society.

Furthermore, in today's world, many societies have its own rules to unify the members’ act, dress, look and many other aspects that one cannot see its true values and ideas just through observation. In contrast, people in America are allowed to act and think in their own ways that they can choose their own ways of life. Reality is a vital factor in understanding a society. So only when people are permitted to live in their own way, they can tell the world what is true about the society which they live in.  It is obvious that Hitler would not permit his people to express their true attitudes about the society in their own way.

What is more, there are many other ways that can help a society be realized. Science, as a tool to build the cities and establish societies, can change the world by influencing many aspects in the lives. Therefore, scientific accomplishments can also reveal some of our social values and beliefs.

In sum, when people have freedom to do what they want, to some extent one can realize the society by observing their behavior and appearances. If not, the observation may be meaningless and the result of the observation might be unjust. If it is difficult to judge a society's values and ideas thorough such observation, we should try other methods and research in other aspects.
