TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

In academic sphere, skepticism serves as an unchangeable method to approach and to gain the truth. Throughout history especially of science, skepticism acts as the impetus in development of humanity. No matter what period it is, skepticism remains an efficient way to obtain knowledge and a necessary thought for students to acquire.
The principles and the truth go hand in hand with skepticism of certain thinkers. Scientists as well as politicians inherit legacies like previous laws, used instruments, The Constitution, even a prosperous nation from their ancestors, and endeavor to comprehend these legacies. After they have gained a general overview of these legacies, their responsibility lies in making full use of these legacies and creating renewed reform by skepticism, or in other word, the critical thinking over the legacies. Copernicus established his previous principles based upon forerunner's achievement. However, only by careful scrutiny over fundamental basis could he provide convincing principles that impel development of astronomy. In political field, when Franklin Roosevelt induced into his first presidency, nationwide economical crisis had almost defeated the great nation. And economic theories inherited from predecessors had been proved total failure. However, Roosevelt brought a new economic theories, a theories engendered from long-term skeptical thinking over both economical model of Soviet and previous free market patterns at home. With this skepticism, Roosevelt successfully brought in plans by governments without deviating the ancient liberty. All theories only act effectively in restricted zones, we will fail to recognize this fact without careful skepticism.
Since skepticism weighs heavily in every field of society, students nowadays should be ready to apply critical and rational thinking over everything they encounter in society. Imagine an engineering student just memorizes introductions of every machines he would possibly encounter and how would he design new machine without any skepticism over problematic principles and the low efficiency. What should be attached more importance on is to learn the principles thoroughly, to operate machine by his hands, to scan other reference book. Thus real understanding and creating derives from thorough investigation guided by skepticism.
Education reform in China requires improvement in every students' skepticism. Since education machineries nowadays put more emphasis on memorizing especially in secondary education, critical thinking is partly forbidden in the examination-oriented education. Students complain that it is arduous to utilize skepticism with both physical and psychological burden. Without significant convert in this policy, skepticism will have no easy access to students of entire nation.
In summary, skepticism, accompanied with development in every fields of society, requires further popularization and application. Only by progressing in this aspect could education reform gain triumph eventually. |
