ISSUE150 - "Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."
The speaker asserts that as a result of the popularization of television and Internet, people no longer need to visit places in person and the traditional tourism will be out of date. However, I strongly disagree with this issue. The scenes you watch and the sounds you hear by electrical methods could not replace the feelings you received when you are personally at the place, at least in the near future.
Admittedly, television and worldwide computer connections help people fulfill their traveling dreams more or less. Many people, who are blocked by the economic or time limitations, could appreciate the beautiful scene or get to know the amazing folk-customs, by watching the television programs or visiting the corresponding websites. Besides, these media often offer pictures or videos which are shot by a perfect but not-easy-to-get views, like using the cameras on planes or underwater.
However, these pictures or videos cannot replace the experience of tourism. What we real want from tourism are the feeling of touching nature or different styles of life, getting the relaxation of our body and heart. All of these cannot be got only by the electrical ways. No matter how vivid the images and the sounds are, they could not bring you the wind of fresh air or the fragrance of flowers. They cannot feel you the greatness of the Great Wall unless you are on the mountains off Beijing. They cannot taste you the flavor of wine unless you are taste them in person. Furthermore, the traveling functions are not only a way to receive, but also a way to communicate. The memory of communicating with your traveling companions or the local people can never be caught through watching television or surfing the net.
Actually, the popularization of television and Internet will somewhat assist the development of tourism. These modern media play key roles in the process of attracting the tourists and the demarcating of the points of interests. Many of my friends had been attracted by the introduction on the internet before they decided to visit some places. In some point of views, it is these media that inspire their enthusiasm of tourism.
To sum up, to visit places personally are still the main approach of people’s releasing their enthusiasm of traveling. The television and worldwide computer connection is only the assistance not the substitution of tourism.
