40"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
I do not approve author’s viewpoint. Human always is society's product. Scholars and researchers certainly can not care about if their researches bring the big contribution to the society, but their researches should not harm the social benefit.
Individual interests are the giant power for the scientific discovery. On the one hand, individual interests may enhance the efficiency of study. Einstein said: interest is the best teacher. Archimedes had strong interest to mathematics from his childhood. He is the first people who calculated out the circumference ratio. When the Roman soldiers wanted to kill him, he also calculated the geometry topic. From the analyze we talk above, we find individual interests play a significant role in scholars and researchers research career.
But the problem is scholars and researchers can not guarantee that their research activities are not dangerous to society. Society can not allow the hazardous researches be continued. There are many scientists have engaged in the research of cloning technology. Because of the greatly interest on clone, they want to clone human. But the cloning of human is prohibited strictly. Clone of human will bring great harm to society. Many scientists have strong interest on computer viruses. They created computer viruses to prove their abilities. But they didn’t know the computer viruses make significant harm to the society and they bring much trouble to people’s life. Therefore, scholars and researches should not pursue the researches which are harmful to the society, even though they have great interest on this research.
Human always is the product of the society and environment. Scholars and researchers’ research activities should be split the difference by the individual interests and social benefits. Although scholars and researchers should not treat the reputation as their final purpose, they should put their final purpose on the benefit of the society. German scientists Koch got the Nobel Prize in physiology because of his study on bacteriology. He had great interest on bacteriology so that he had very deep study on this subject.
To sum up, individual interest can advance the scholars and researchers to investigate deeply. The scientific researches should be promoted which are contribute to the society.
