TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The conclusion in the passage from the president of a chain of cheese stores is that they should discontinue stocking many of their varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on the domestic cheeses to improve their profits. To illustrate his conclusion, he asserted that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheese in Wisconsin and a survey from World magazine claims an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers.
At the first glance, it seems to be reasonable, but the further influence claims that this speaker must be fail to make this decision, as his illogical illustration.
First, until the aspersion, which is the domestic cheeses is better selling than other types of cheese, is true would his conclusion be convinced. Unfortunately, the sample in the five best-selling cheeses could not prove that. In the newest store, the committee around might prefer the domestic cheeses, because the cheapest price rather the smell. If other stores located in other states, and the neighborhood are all rich, who do not care the price but the smell, the president's imagination must be a big mistake, and the cheeses would not be sold in other stores and the improved profit must be disappeared.
Secondly, the recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine could not be use as a evidence to prove an increasing preference for domestic cheeses. Because no information ever mentioned in the passage shows that the survey's number, age structure, equity of responding and the reality of the result. Take an imagine that if all the samples are in old age, who are familiar with the smell of domestic cheeses and most of them might be poor, so they prefer the domestic cheeses for the cheap price. Nevertheless, it is possible the most of youths and adults consider abroad cheeses superior, and they also would like to pay for them, so obviously the abroad cheeses must selling better than the domestic ones, with the high price, stores located throughout the United States must earn an improved profit.
Furthermore, limiting inventory is not the only way to reduce expenses if the stores need to do that. They could reduce the number of employees and limiting the advertisement expenses, which all could reduce the expenses any make profit.
In sum, the argument is a failure to convince us that reducing expenses by limiting inventory and discontinue stocking many of varieties of improved cheeses could bring profit. To enhance his conclusion, the arguer should add the details of selling and the strong evidence which can prove the survey equal and other information to claim the domestic cheeses is really better to sell and making profit easier than others. |
