ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

With the develop of high technology, we have stepped into a rapid-pace era and a large number of people think the study of history is useless if it, which stand for the period of history being studied, is not relevant to our daily lives. However, as far as I am concerned, the study of history possess precious value, no matter it relate with people's everyday life or not.

To begin with, sometimes people study history merely for the sake of knowledge.  Since mankind is a unique creature, which has an appetite for knowledge by nature, they are always promoted by their curiosity to find out thousands of questions stemmed from their heart: Why the world become something like this?  Where are ourselves from? How our society developed?... To seek the answers of all these questions, they have no choice but to study history. The history of universe might be able to tell them how the earth formed,  the history of the evolvement of human being would enable them to know where themselves might come from, and the study of historical events involving the activities of ancient people could inform them the changes which have been undergone by our society. In the light of this statement, history study are valuable, even for the mere reason that people could learn extraordinarily huge amount of things through the study all kinds of history in order to satisfy their lust for knowledge.

Furthermore, by studying the history of the development of human being, we get a better understanding about ourselves and learn something from the successes and failures of our ancestors. As is known to all, history is filled with the story of millions of people who lived before us. In spite of the fact that they did not see what is happening today, their experiences were somewhat similar with ours. After all, they were human beings as ourselves. Everyone of us must undergo the process of growing up, struggling for success and getting close to death. The story of people in history, whether they managed to deal with a situation or not, might tell us how to avoid repeating their mistakes and how to solve problems properly in a similar circumstance. In this sense, we could actually draw numerous lessons from the history which concerning human activity.

In fact, there are several of other merits of studying history, such asculture worth, aesthetic valueand recreation function. Take its culture value for example first. Children who are born into a certain culture would develop a better sense and understanding of their own culture, if they have been taught the history of this culture and have learned to cherish the charm of it. When it comes to the aesthetic and entertainment merit, it is the same. Being separated from us by space and time, history events were covered by a mysterious veil, even we have found a increasing number of historical sites and have collected considerable data. As a result, astronomical number of details in history remains unknown and sometimes we cannot help to make imagination about them in a prefect or somewhat romantic way. Immerging ourselves in the beautiful imagination about the past world, we could escape from this busy world for a short while and therefore alleviate our stress and anxiety created by hard work or study. Obviously, this function of history study exist quite independent the relationship between our daily lives and history.

All the foregoing tells us that the value lies in the study history does not depend on its relation to our practical life. People study history not only to learn more about the secret of the universe, the nature, the society and themselves, but also develop a better perception of culture, and add beauty and fun to the world within their mind.
