The statement asserts that the artist, not the critic, provides society with something of lasting value. If the pioneering critics had not noticed Mozart’s music works and made them public, who would have known Mozart’s talent on music and his world famous compositions nowadays? From this perspective, it is both the artist and the critic who create something of lasting value to the society.
As known to all, the artist’ valuable works makes it possible for the critic’s commentaries. There would be no piece of critique from any critic if no artists produced a single piece of art work. The artist to the critic is just like the commodities to the advertisements. What we need is the commodities suited for us, with the guidance of advertisements. However, without the manufactures’ efforts to produce more and more commodities, there cannot be anything supplied to satisfy our routine needs, not to mention enjoy a diverse life. As to art works, to leave the history works of lasting value demands quantities of preliminary art works.
There is no doubt that a critic in a specific field of art can discover outstanding talents, and put forward their works to public, record artists’ achievements. Moreover, a critique from a famous critic will more or less improve the quality of an artist’s works, if he/she holds a justice opinion freely to criticize the works of an artist, away from the control of things other than art itself. At the primary level, a famous critic’s appreciation on a common artist’s works might bring the artist enormous incomes, which can keep the artist away from fund problems and help him/her create new works; at the creative level, a prestigious critic’s positive critiques on an artist’s painting aid the painter to gain more reputation and confidence which plays a vital role in one’s creative work. Moreover, it will be impossible for the mass of the society who lack of comprehensive knowledge to find out excellent contemporary art works without the help of the critic who have professional skills.
However, neither the artist nor the critic can exist without each other, to produce something of lasting value to human society. A critic cannot live without the artist’s works. As of today, plenty of art works has been created worldwide among which exist great works lasting long in human history as benchmark as Shakespeare’s poems, as well as draffy pieces that should be washed out with the help of the critic. Without the critic’s objective critiques, more and more draffy works will pass down from one generation to another, mixed with splendid works of lasting value, thus how would descending generations find out eminent ones during their limited life span?
In sum, the artist creates works, and the critic supplements works. But neither of them alone can produce things of lasting value. It is their coexistence that supplies the society with something of lasting value.
