TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
WORDS: 552 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-2-27 12:06:50
For the purpose of addressing the world’s most persistent social and political problems, we should firstly identify the complexity of this issue. Is establishing a global university the optimal approach, through which all nations could solve present problems? Is it possible or necessary to invole all nations? To some extent, I agree with the author’s assertion. However, if we want to make it come true, we should be cautious in face of this problem.
As a threshold matter, students from different countries would bring diverse cultural and educational perspectives to the during problems they seek to solve. A global university could provide students and faculty with an opportunity to communicate, promote the communication, and thus find a comparatively appropriate means of solving problems. For example, many young people in china plan to go abroad for furthering education. On the one hand, they could learn new and advanced knowledge. On the other hand, they could know new culture, and through it recognize their own culture better.
Another compelling argument in favor of a global university has to do with the fact that increasing social and political problems have threatened the survival of all animals, including human beings. Pollution disserves our environment, while wars result in many people losing their lives. Due to be overly hunted, wild animials are in danger of extinction. Solving these problems requires global cooperation, which a global university can facilitate.
Admittedly, the establishment of such a university requires all nations’ concerns. However, query whether all nations should be involved to establish it in order that the university could achieve its goals. Because it is not easy to agree on a common agreement, with which all nations are satisfied. Developed countries might focus on protecting evironment and human rights, while economic advancement maybe more vital for developing countries. This conflict might defeat the university’s purpose. Consider, for instance, the difference between China and America, and the example of United Nations. So if they want to make the purpose come true, participant nations would need to overcome a myriad of cultural and political obstacles that might stand in the way of success. For the greatest good of the greatest number of people, the establishment and progress of the university require an open mind to all reasonalbe ideas, suggestions, and policies.
A final problem with a global university is that where the university’s attention should be paid and how it allocates limited resources. When the university focuses on a certain issue, it would ignore another which might be more important. While this is not reason enough not to establish a global university, it nevertheless is a concern that university’s administrators and participant nations should be aware of in allocating resouces and intellectual talent.
To sum up, the establish of the global university is important for solving world’s most persistent social and political issues. All nations should respectively serve their functions so that they can agree on a common interest in problems needed to be addressed recently. As long as each nation is careful not to neglect its own responsibility, and as long as the president of such university are careful to open mind to all useful information. Only in this way can the world create a good environment for present animals, incluing human beings, and provide our generation with a bright future.
