ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

2.社会没有不重视智力，教育界以智力教育为重点
3.非智力也一样重要，但是与智力相比有时候被忽略.

Intellect, known as reasoning, critical thinking and other cognitive skills, is the propelling force of the development of science and technology. According to the title statement, society does not place sufficient value on these vital abilities. However, in my observation, people actually overemphasize the role of intellect, whereas overlook the importance of non-intellect, which refers to emotion, feeling, personality, and psychological conditions.

Indeed, intellect is of great importance to our society. We could not imagine how the world could be like without the help of the intellect. Intelligent skills make mankind superior than other creatures, as it enable them to explore the world around themselves, discover the hidden rules and secrets of the nature and universe, acquire complicated knowledge from books and practice.. This knowledge concerns all the disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography and so forth. The wonderful scientific and technology achievements, like the discovery of gravity, the establishment of the theory of relativity, the invention of computer and so on, accomplished by our society is abundant productions of human intellect. With the ever-increasing knowledge attained by people in the past several centuries with their intellect, we enjoy the prosperity of our modern civilization and witness the rapid development of science and technology nowadays.

Acting on the contention that intellect could bring us a better life, our society never deemphasize the worth of intellect, especially in this era of efficiency-oriented world. Without sufficient emphasis which has been laid on intellect by society, there not would be so many marvelous inventions and discoveries. Our education system always highlight the skills of intellect and mainly offer the students intellect-centered courses, such as mathematics, philosophy and physics, to help them cultivating their reasoning  and cognitive abilities. Educators believe that these skills accompanied with their specific knowledge would prepare them for their profession in the future.. In this society, people think highly of the quality of person who show excellent logical thinking and reasoning and could skillfully handle practical problem them meet during their study and work. Every year numerous of students, reaping the benefit of intellectual cultivation, graduate from school and become qualified workers who create treasure for the well-being of the society.

Nevertheless, it is undeniable that a better society need more than intellect and the role of non-intellect factors is equally indispensable to our life.  These factors include emotion, virtue, feeling, value system and psychological conditioning and the like. However, non-intellectual development are sometimes be neglected comparing to intellect. Most teachers often merely care about the academic achievement of their students, while turn a blind eye to their non-intellect respects.  Over emphasizing intellectual accomplishment, however, would lead student to be stressful and tension. Under this circumstance, their weak psychological quality might leave them at the risk of suffering form mental disorder or even disease and their inability to relief their own pressure and oppression might also incur detrimental effect to both physical and metal heath.  Moreover, history informs us that a man with high intelligence and low moral standard would be a threat to others. The inhuman behavior of Hitler would serve as a typical example in this point. Non-intellectual effort also teach people how to appreciate art, how to lead a content and happy life, how to respect others and themselves and how to be a person with good temperament and personality. All of these are essential for everybody as well as society.

In conclusion, society seldom, if ever, deemphasize the value of intellect for its great importance, because intellect is so indispensable to the progress of our human being and the improve of our society. However, the role of non-intellect is also deserve emphasis. The thriving the civilization calls for a balance which demand both the virtue of intellect and non-intellect.
