TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 524          TIME: 00:42:54          DATE: 2008/3/8 12:38:00

I acknowledge fundamentally that it is necessary for eduation to meet the individuals needs and interests of each students. Intricate as the issue is, following explanations are in need.

To begin with, it is necessary for us to know the defination and effects of the term  "education" mentioned in the issue. Education, in a narrow sense, refers to school education, that is, teachers in schools direct students in their study and morality. Generally, school education has two main aims. First, to direct students to shape their own value and morality. Secondly, to make students know what are they interested in and teach some basic knowledge according to their interests for the basis of further study.

According to the education's defination and effects, it is clear that education, to be effective, should meet one's needs and interests. First, every student has his or her own family backgrounds and their own thoughts, they would unquestionably have different rudimentary values before they go to school. Thus, only if education concerning these differences and make differet tactics to different students can it shape their values and moralities right. Consider, for instance, if there are two students one is from a poor village and the other is from a rich family in metropolis, can we treat them in the same way? Obviously, as the poor student is more likely to be tempted by money or some other fresh things, we should tell them how to treat money right. And as for the rich one, we should teach them how to be frugal and the proper attitudes to treat those who are more impoverish. Secondly, our interests are diverse as well as our backgrouds, it is not wise for education to arrange the same things to teach everyone. If schools do arrange the same courses to every, except those courses that are necessary for every one, our potential ability may not be excavated.

It might be tempting to think that the resources in schools, such as teachers and classrooms, are limited, how can we teach chilren in different ways to meet their needs and interests. This point of view seems logical, however, we can finally figure an avenue out to teach different students in different ways, that is optional courses. Though we are all different, our interests and backgrounds may be similar in some ways , based on this point, schools arrange different kinds of optional courses for us to choose. And these courses could effectively meet our needs and interests. For instance, if one majored in computer science, is interested in arts, he or she can choose arts courses in his or her spare time. Moreoover some one may argue that one school would never meet all students' needs and interests. However, people who argues fails to consider our education as a system, we are allowed to choose courses in other schools, even it may far away from us.

In sum, based on the defination  and effects of education, I agree with the speaker's assertion that only when education meets the individual needs and interests of each students can it be really effective, because our different backgounds and interests.
