As for the nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits can satisfy human needs and curiosity in some way, the author assert that they can play a vital role. In my viewpoint, the more developed mainstream science, the less ignored the importance of the nonmainstream science.

To begin with, any thing exits for some reasons, such the nonmainstream areas of inquiry is it. When people confronted with dilemma and complex questions to resolve, people often deal with them through traditional ways.
If the logical is not helpful, some people will resort to astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and so on to resolve problems by realizing the fact that our choices turn to be stupid. Moreover, the anguish caused by losing friends or relatives from their family can be relieved by some of these nonmainstream areas of inquiry.  Moreover, insisting on these irrational pursuits lead to harmful results in some extent. The presumption of existence of "knowing the past" and "forecasting the future" can be the result of human's enduring
fascination with research for the other method to connect with our past  empirical evidences. Indeed, there are some phenomena cannot be explained by mainstream sciences, and the paranormal pursuits will meet people's curiosity by giving some explanations, even though the explanations are ridiculous. It is still impossible to possess their rationality by mainstream areas.

However, the status of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry is fading as the time goes by, so they will never play a vital role in society. As a matter of fact, what we call nonmainstream inquiry was once the "mainstream" one. They not only had the function, but also formed authority of the society in the past. The primitive people resorted to astrology, fortune-telling etc. to meet their psychological need since they are the only reasonable reason. Even in that situation, mainstream still thrive in certain ways, because the nonmainstream inquiry cannot meet public need. So we can conclude that the rational and reasonable science is the method that people prefer to resort to. On the other hand, stubborn adherence to the irrational pursuit might lead to self-deception, delusion, even intolerance. Since the nonmainstream inquiry is an exclusive system whose consequence and logic cannot be explained by science, confronting with the suspicion from others, the ones fascinating the future telling  and the like will consider the others as heretics. A cogent example is obvious to justify in the world, such as the holy war and anti-terrorism, which are often caused by the conflict of religion.

In summarize, from what has been discussed above judging from all evidences offered, we may safely draw the conclusion that only does the mainstream play a vital role in the society although such nonmainstream areas of inquiry can relieve people's mental suffering because of no addressing of mainstream science.
