TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level,

all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions

relevant to the courses they teach."

基本同意但需要限制科目
1、学校应该培养懂得理论结合实际的学生
2、这样有助于老师研究课题的选择
3、一些科目不需要这样的规定。

The statement is fundamentally correct: suggesting faculty to accumulate the working experience outside academic world is a way improving the instruction quality at the college and university; after all without practice the instruction tends to make no sense. However, a more accurate statement should draw a distinction among some subjects which combine practice and theory well, and some accent-theory subjects and others, for the reason that there is no need to compel faculty belong the former two subjects to work outside or work in position relevant to their courses.

The chief reason why I generally agree with the statement is that college and university should cultivate talents for the society who can apply what they have learned to the real world, and graduates without practical experience seems unaccommodating with the competition in the society. One needs look no further than the recent trend in the job market. Not knowing the work, some graduates even tend to ask the human resource manager what they can do rather than to recommend themselves. Else, some corporations prefer high school graduates to college graduates for the reason that high school graduates have known more about the practice, negotiation in the society. If faculty once worked in society, they can impart the practical experience to the students, which benefit students not only in understanding jobs relevant to the course but also in finding their favorite job.

Another benefit has to do with faculty research in the realm of their specialty. Useful research directions for society can foster students a habit thinking real-life utilization of the theory and principles appears in the textbooks, while construction with only lab experiments unfortunately render a student a person who only knows how to deal with a problem with little or exact, maneuverable equipment in labs. For instance, many production about advanced material manage succeed in our lab, but when it comes to the factory production, the advanced performance disappears because the real-world process is not exact as that through the lab experiment. On the other hand, such a kind of success will not lose spark in real operation If only faculty can programme after taking account of the capacity of equipments in factory.

Nevertheless, the statement should be qualified in that faculty from few subjects has less reason to have to work outside school or for profession relevant to the subject. Ample examples for those subjects involve art and philosophy. For artwork, study in college or university is a process integrating the theory and practice. For philosophy, any career is relevant to it but whether the career is fit for the philosophy teacher depends on the comprehensive ability of the teacher not the philosophy theory in his/her mind. Because reason of the many actions can be explained by the philosophy theory, but some people can not practice well even be good at logical thinking.

To sum up, besides faculty from some special subjects, I generally agree the statement proposed by the speaker, for the reason that study without knowing the practice in the real world tend to be useless and blind and knowing practice experience is helpful when the student find a job and a teacher design his/her programme.

小结:三个观点都不错,只是第三个观点关于philosophy的例子没看明白是如何支持该分论点的。
