e1TOPIC: ISSUE162 - "One often hears about the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own lives. However, the conditions in which people find themselves have been largely established long before people become aware of them. Thus, the concept of personal responsibility is much more complicated and unrealistic than is often assumed."

As cactus is created by the desert, is the concept of personal responsibility defined by the conditions?(我同学说太突兀了,我还自以为吸引人眼球,唉。。。。帮忙评判下,谢。。。)
The statement asserts that the concept of personal responsibility varies with the conditions, which exist long before people become aware of them. In my view, individuals need to realize the the significance of taking responsibility for their own lives, as current wisdom says. Because our behavior is not only influenced by the culture but also determined by ourselves. So the final judgement should depend on a case-by-case analysis of two key factors, that is the society we live and our own principle.
Admittedly, as man is a product of society, to some extent, people are influenced by the coditions around them, and accept the culture and custom unconsciously. It's common sense that the culture of a particular society is instilled in a human being from infancy, which is often uncontrollable. People's behaviors are relevant to their cultures. For example, people from some Eastern Asian countries express their friendliness by asking your family or work, while people from America consider it offensive. The fuction of the culture on guiding people's actions is obvious.
In addition, the main moral standards of bahaviors are created by the society, such as abiding by rules of discipline and laws, and respecting for the old and loving for the young. Though reactions will vary with different people, they obey the same social morality. In a sense, moral standards created by the society benefit the development of human; we choose to listen to the society voluntarily. As a member of a society, we are affected by the outside deep and wide.
However, environment is not the only factor in determining our behaviors; personal choice and thoughts decides our response to the social and physical environment too. Numerous psychological studies show that our instinct plays a vital role in our behaviors. When we are in danger, we fear, quiver, even cry by instinct; when we have benefits, we feel happy and laugh by instinct. These actions by instincts can't change with the conditions.
Some people even overcome the instinct, for they have a strong belief, which definitively determine people's behavior. Those people consider the ideal more precious than anything else, even life; so they are able to bear additional tribulations. For intance, Giordano Btuno, an Italian philosopher, using Copernican principles in formulating his cosmic theory of an infinite universe, chose to be burned at the stake to defend his theory. At that time, the effects of personal choice and ideal are so significant that the influence of the conditions can be ignored.
As a free man, we can choose our faith freely. Despite that our thoughts come from the society, as we growing up, we can choose what we need and change our thoughts. Everyone has his own belief. Different ideologies can exsit in one country. So in the same condition, it's reasonable for people to act totally different. For example, someone considers money is the most important; others take care of the honor first. People make their decision according to their own social value.
In sum, both the outside and the inside react on people's behavior. By weighing environment and ability, or reality and ideal, we make ultimate choice, which is determined by the society and oursleves.
