I fundamentally agree the speaker’s contention that it is a mistake to theorize without data. However, there are also some fields where data is not so important in making decisions or data even does not exist.

In one respect I agree with the conclusion that data is important in coming to theorize. Theorize is so central when we making decisions such as whether we should invest particular business or whether the current market should be regulated to guarantee the development of our country’s market that getting accurate theorize is necessary and prerequisite. In such area we can foresee that theorizing without collecting enough data will definitely affect the investment or the progress of our country. For example, when a fund owner wants to invest in the stock market, he has to collect sufficient data of the operation state about a company to decide whether the very company is worth his investment. Without these procedures, his investment will fall into dilemma like the other retail investors.

By theorizing before collecting data the decision-maker may probably run the risk of affecting people’s lives. These are the days of high inflation when we cannot afford to go ahead with regulations without appropriate information. Various indexes have been devised to measure different aspects of inflation, such as the CPI (measures inflation as experienced by consumers in their day-to-day living expenses), the Producer Price Index PPI ( measures inflation at earlier stages of the production and marketing process ,the Employment Cost Index (ECI) and so on. Each index needs numerous and representative data. So if the government has to make some reform as to insure the normal progress, decisions should not be made according to the words made by the hypercritical mass media which always fawns the audiences but those indexes that validly show the current state of the whole country. Failing to do these, like the dictator in the despotic country, our country will fall back without doubt.

Despite the necessity of obtaining data before theorizing, I find it unnecessary to gain data in some realm, like art, literature, politics, and so on. Although experiments have proved that there are actually some correlations between our feelings toward a painting and the components of colors in the painting, it’s not because of this that we give fame to the painting but our observation of it. In the area of literature, great writers will not taking the numbers of characters into account in their writings. They just move on their minds and express their minds on the papers. We readers will not count the numbers of words of the writing to decide whether it’s good works or not. We just sense the works to make conclusion whether the writing is outstanding or not. So when the saying of ‘it is a mistake to theorize without data’ is applied to these areas, it just does not work.

In sum, while data is critical in some fields like investments or market monitor to make theorize which our decisions are based on, data does not play such a significant role in areas as art or literature. The speaker’s contention is just too hasty.

事例很新颖的说，引用了许多经济方面的术语，但是我觉得偏离了theorize这一点...这个是make decision,而theorize应该远比这个复杂和正式，可能理工科方面的事例能更好的说明吧

至于反例中举到的Art 等，我觉得比较好，但是后面的具体分析似乎又回到了make decision这一步，如
果能用这一领域某些未由data建立的theory会更好吧

总的来说，我觉得作者的语言水平相当高，逻辑也很严密。但就这个题目而言，似乎误解了theorize一词的意义，因而在举例方面不太切题

是啊，可能跑题了。
我的想法是 数据-理论-决定 题中说it is a mistake to theorize without data我的文章注重在于theorize without data 的后果，而不是注重在得到的theorize的真确与否。不知道算不算跑题啊。

呃 我觉得这方面倒是没有跑题，但是我理解的这里所说的theorize是理论化的过程，感觉你的例子都在说决策的事，一个决定和将一件事理论化还是有本质区别的吧。。。毕竟题目说的是theorize而不是decide.

呃 比方说吧 柯布西耶写《走向新建筑》可以算是一种理论化， 但是他提出巴黎规划方案只能算是决策
