In the history, there is always a fierce debate on the reform between the radical, who believe that it is possible and necessary for some measures to be taken out if all standards have been considered and the conservative, who opposite fierce reform mostly in the consideration of various influences caused by it. Then would you prefer to be the radical or the conservative? Would you pursue a goal by whatever means at whatever price? In my view, we must be sure that the goal is really worthy and appropriate. Even though, during the process of achieving the goal, we must consider the price we have to pay and assure that the actions are within the law and the human morality.
To begin with, it is necessary and important for us to determine whether the goal we pursue is actually worthwhile. I think the most standard is that whether the goal conforms to the interests of the majority in the long term. Some goals seem noble and worthy pursuing are only related to personal interests, which is aptly illustrated by Adolf Hitler. Although he claimed he was fighting for getting rid of the humiliation imposed on it by the victorious countries of the World War I and the living space of German, his actual purpose of individual power and world hegemony cannot be disguised. So can we say Hitler’s goal is worthy, even if it might be worthy to himself?
Admittedly, a goal which is really worthy deserves our efforts to make it com true. Only because the realization of a variety of goals one after another, our society can continue and develop. Take Thomas Edison as an example. In order to extend the life of the filament, he tried more than 6000 kinds of fiber materials before attaining the right one that can lasts more than 1000 hours and achieve the purpose of durability. Edison describes the key of his success as ,Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. This example shows that once we are sure the goal is worthy and beneficial, we should do our best to pursue it and make it realize. We can hardly imagine the progress of our society without the entrepreneurs pursuing corporate profits, statesmen pursing the optimization of political system and scientists pursuing the invention of Advanced technology.
However, even if the goals are worthy actually, it dose not mean that we can pursue it by any means. In the process of achieving the goals, we must keep in mind that our behavior should be within the law as well as human morality. Besides, we should carefully weigh the benefits of achieving these goals against their cost. We had better think twice if the price we pay is greatly beyond the benefits. For example, it is reasonable to reduce the birth rate in the purpose of easing the population pressure in developing countries such as China and India, but is it justifiable to force citizens to have abortion? When it comes to the business, it is reasonable to maximize the profits and minimize the costs, but is it justifiable to obtain the purpose by illegal ways such as tax evasion or at the expense of the interests of employees? Or consider it is reasonable to control the pollution, but is it justifiable to close all the factories with pollution emissions? Although these measures might solve the particular problems, they will probably effect the social stability. In short, when pursuing a goal, we cannot ignore the means and the price to achieve it.
To sum up, the worth of a goal is not only due to the benefits it brings but also the side effects it causes and the price paid to achieve it. Morever, only if we pursue the goals by means within the law and morality, the achievement of them is valuable.
