Based on a research about the differences of the pain that men and women experience after they used the certain painkiller—kappa opiods (KO), the recommendation that KO should be prescribed for women if pain medication is required, while men should take other kind of pain medication, is unconvincing.
To begin with, the number of samples is insufficient to support the conclusion. The survey contains merely 48 samples, including 28 men and 20 women. Such a small proportion is not able to represent millions patients suffering pain. The women involved in the survey may have some characters, such as an ability to bear more pain than normal women, which the men involved do not have.
Even if the number of people examined is large enough to satisfy the quantity required, the fact that they are suffering the pain of extracting wisdom teeth only make it is unreasonable to draw any conclusion about the all patients. Considering wisdom teeth, it is probably that women are not in pain as serious as men are, because of different structure or frequency the wisdom teeth used. Distinctions which are more obviously between wisdom teeth and other organs illustrate, furthermore, that the result of the research cannot be extended to other field.
Even assuming that there will be same consequences between men and women in most medical fields, we cannot say women should be given KO only while men must be given other painkillers.
Although there is less effect of taking KO by men than women, we do not see the evidence that other painkillers can bring better curative effect to men than KO. On the other hand , we are also lack of proofs to demonstrate women cannot gain better curative effect by using painkillers else other than KO. In addition, some painkillers may cause allergy to certain people. Unless author provides more cogent evidences, we can’t recognize the application and forbiddance of KO in women and men.
Finally, the differences of using KO should not be considered as the differences of using all painkillers. Each painkiller has its own composition, in the condition that we have not confirmed the element causing the differences; it is too curt to revaluate the effects of all medications on man versus women.
In conclusion, the recommendation that KO should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required and men should be given other painkillers is not persuasive. to bolster it the author must provide clear evidence that different experience of pain between men and women is caused by KO, and KO is more effective than the others for women but have poor effective for men.
