The author contends that technologies not only affect but also determine social customs and ethics. In my view, although the development of technologies significantly influences human's customs and ethics, it is not the most critical factor to determine our customs and ethics.
Admittedly, with the development of technologies people’s customs have significantly changed. For example, because of widely spread of the technologies of computers and the Internet, the digital documents, such as emails and e-books, increasingly replace the paper copies. Lots of people gradually get used to sending emails instead of writing a paper letter. The convenience of technologies has profoundly influence our customs. Another example is that the improvement of transport technologies. Nowadays people could easily take hours cross half of the world by airplanes to visit their friends or spend holidays, which could hardly been imagined in ancient times. In brief, such technologies have profoundly changed the ways in which people live.
In addition, the social ethics are questioned in the face of certain new technologies. Our traditional moral standards inevitably have flaws when facing new technological inventions, a fitting example of which is the argument of nuclear weapons. The usage of nuclear weapons is criticized by most of people including the scientists who discovered the nuclear power, because such weapons are so powerful that all the nuclear weapons already produced are enough to destroy earth for several times. The nuclear weapons may be necessary for a country to threaten and defeat adversaries, but they are too dangerous for human to control. As a result, whether to product and hold the nuclear weapons would be a great moral issue for our system of ethics now. Therefore, it is necessary to mend our ethics to catch up with the development of technologies.(你是想说传统道德标准有缺陷吗?
However, technology is not the determinate factor to build our customs and ethics. Social customs and ethics are gradually formed during hundreds years of people’s daily lives, and rely on the fundamental thoughts and wishes of human beings. For instance, respecting the old and caring for the youth are included in every nation’s customs and ethics no matter how technologies develop. Cooperating with others and assisting the weak are the basic rules for people to overcome the difficulties in history. The technologies and science are without emotion,(感觉少一句?) and actually, it is the people themselves who determine the social customs and ethics.
Moreover, we should not let technologies determine our ethics. Although scientific research could produce substantial social benefits, the science and technologies, which may violate social ethics and harm certain group of people, should never be allowed. To illustrate this, there is an example that the physicians and scientists who had conducted biomedical experiments on concentration camp(这个词的用法我不太确定) prisoners during the Second World War were judged guilty in trials. Such deed trampled human lives and violated social ethics and morality.
In sum, technologies do influence social customs and ethics, however, social customs and ethics are determined by people themselves rather than technologies, and we should never determine our ethics only based on the benefits of technologies.
这次文章前两段写的很好,整篇很通顺,个人建议你是不是可以给3,4,5段的论述增加点论据或论证,可以更充分哈!:) |
