TOPIC: ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

Is taking a practical point of view the only way to succeed? Should idealistic views be superceded by pragmatic behavior? Obviously, people will find it almost impossible to come to an agreement on the highly controversial issue due to their different experiences and conflicting values. In the last analysis, I am more inclined to oppose the title of the statement.

Admittedly, some over-idealistic points which are unrealistic need to be properly improved or completely changed by practice; after all, like it or not, there is no Utopia at all. Therefore, all our speech and behavior must be based on practical and pragmatic foundation; otherwise, we might eat the bitter fruit of illusion. The experience of Don Quixote, although just a fictitious character described by Cervantes, is a representative case in point. He recognized himself as a cavalier, and imagined to adventure in his own idealistic kingdom, in which country hostel is great castle so its owner is certainly the castellan, and the windmills are evil giants, even innocent sheep are enemy armies, and the like. In all his life, Quixote made some jokes, met many troubles, suffered incalculable losses and even was nearly killed several times, until the end of his life when he regretted on his idealistic views. Perhaps the example is hyperbole and it is too simple to please someone, but there is something profound in, something which we should pay attention to. To some extent, we should concede that pragmatic behavior might be better than idealistic one for our success and survival.

Nonetheless, despite the shortcomings of idealism mentioned above, the advantages of idealism are equally, if not more, apparent. Idealistic points are not useless at all; by contraries, idealistic views are usually perfect ones, which can inspirit people to pursue their ideals and gain inspirations as well as achievements. Our history, especially the history of art, is replete with such examples. For example, Vincent van Gogh, a distinguish drawer and a typical idealist, pursued absolute beauty all his life. However, the practice was not as perfect as his ideal. The only way to pursue his individuality and passion is to paint them in pictures. The deep love of perfection as well as the enormous shock between practice and ideal incited van Gogh’s talent. Most of his works showed his great ideal in spirit and depression for the pragmatic world. If he had no idealistic points, van Gogh might become an ordinary drawer or even a daubster at most; and today we might not have such excellent works as the series sunflower and the Starry Night and so on. Perhaps, a student can take pragmatic behavior for high marks and a businessman can hold pragmatic views for great profit; however, in the realm of art, artist should be idealistic for real success.

In addition, what is also worth noticing is that some idealistic points give us hope and enthusiasm, lifting us to new heights. Just as Leo Tolstoy, famous Russian writer, once said (and I paragraph):”Ideal is beacon.” Idealistic views can be a road map and induct pragmatic behavior sometimes. For example, when the popular communism was first introduced as idealism by Karl Marx, how many work people were encouraged and inspired? Afterward, Lenin in the Soviet Union and Mao Zedong in China put this ideal into practice and both won liberation and success eventually. When the famous speech “I have a dream” was addressed by Martin Luther King, how many African-Americans were excited in tears at that time? Incited by the nice dream, they resisted the unjust Jim Crow laws and fought for their own rights. The idealistic points are hard to be superceded by simpler options; contrarily, ideals, just like Williams Shakespeare once wrote, “nothing of them doth fade”.

To sum up, there are several other aspects relevant to the issue under discussion, which, unfortunately, I have no time to explore in detail here. In my point of view above, the idealistic views are slightly more important than the pragmatic ones. However, just as a famous saying goes ,”going too far is just as not going far enough”; we should neither place over-emphasis on ideals in such a practical society today. As a result, we should call for a balance between the idealistic views and the pragmatic behaviors, which might be the best way to succeed.

有点长,但自己舍不得删,希望多给些删改意见!谢谢!

Is taking a practical point of view the only way to succeed? Should idealistic views be superseded by pragmatic behavior? Obviously, people will find it almost impossible to come to an agreement on the highly controversial issue due to their different experiences and conflicting values. In the last analysis,(这个意思是说到底,归根结底的意思,感觉好像不太搭配阿I am more inclined to oppose the title of the statement.

Admittedly, some over-idealistic points which are unrealistic need to be properly improved or completely changed by practice; after all, like it or not, there is no Utopia at all. Perhaps the example is hyperbole and it is too simple to
persuasive someone, but there is something profound in, something which we should pay attention to.(这个something 到底是什么呢,作者可以再多说一点,例子可以精简一点,然后分析多一点)To some extent, we should concede (concede好像有点让步的意味,觉得这里还是用admit更好) that pragmatic behavior might be better than idealistic one for our success and survival.

Nonetheless, despite the shortcomings of idealism mentioned above, the advantages of idealism are equally, if not more, apparent. Idealistic points are not useless at all; by contraries, idealistic views are usually perfect ones, which can inspirit people to pursue their ideals and gain inspirations as well as achievements. popular(?) communism was first introduced as idealism by Karl Marx, how many work people were encouraged and inspired? Afterward, Lenin in the Soviet Union and Mao Zedong in China put this ideal into practice and both won liberation and success eventually. Incited by the nice dream, they resisted the unjust Jim Crow laws and fought for their own rights. The idealistic points are hard to be superseded by simpler options; contrarily, ideals,(这个没看懂啊,楼主有空给我讲解一下吧) just like Williams Shakespeare once wrote, “nothing of them doth fade”.

To sum up, there are several other aspects relevant to the issue under discussion, which, unfortunately, I have no time to explore in detail here.
( 呵呵,我觉得在正式考试的时候这句话就不用写了阿In my point of view above, the idealistic views are slightly more important than the pragmatic ones. However, just as a famous saying goes ,”going too far is just as not going far enough”; we should neither place over-emphasis on ideals in such a practical society today. As a result, we should call for a balance between the idealistic views and the pragmatic behaviors, which might be the best way to succeed.
