Admittedly, pragmatism is vital in solving some practical problems which are relevant to our daily lives closely, ranging from the academic and social realm to the business and political realm. After all, it is impossible for us to get rid of those actual problems, such as food, clothes, living and travel, without solving which, we cannot have a comfortable living circumstance, let alone talking about the ideal. This is especially true to the political leaders. When the 5.12 catastrophic earthquake happened in China, the immediate measures that Chinese government leaders took was hurrying to the earthquake area, commanding the fighting with the disaster instead of still staying in the capital and talking about what progress we would achieve in 20 years or what comfortable life our people would live in ideally. In addiction, pragmatism can cultivate people's spirit of diligence and sureness which is available in today's society with the development economy and technology. According a survey, the people that the society most need are neither corporation manager nor intellectual, but those with a unique skill and work in the basal place of a company or factory as their pragmatisms can bring direct benefit. Therefore, in view of serving the basic interest and solving the current problems, pragmatism is significant.

While pragmatism is indispensible in our life, idealism also figures prominently in addressing human need as a psychic support. Russian writer Leo Tolstoy once said:" Ideal is the beacon. Without ideal, there is no secure direction; without direction, there is no life." Ideal, serving as the spirit support, can firm an individual's brief and confidence, encouraging him/her to pursue a greater and far-sighted aim. In possess of ideal, our minds will become active and our potential will be exploded fully. In the business realm, ideal facilitate a brilliant success. To a businessman, ideal is ambition, which helps him to achieve the final goal and prosper the society. In the political area, a capable leader should be far-sighted and set up certain ideal plans and goals, leading his people to advance towards them; otherwise his country will never develop and improve. Indeed, throughout the recorded history, a host of celebrities could serve to prove this point. Were George Washington and Gandhi set a vision to win the independence from the Britain, till today American and India would still be the colonies of Britain.

Therefore, pragmatism and idealism pave the way to the success with concerted efforts; just as in an attempt to build a skyscraper, both bricks and blueprint are essential factors. What pragmatism to idealism is bricks to blueprint. In scientific area, a multitude of new theories are rooted in certain ideal assumptions or ideas which might be regarded as paralogism at first, but are proved by the experiments with scientists' diligent efforts later - which can be viewed as pragmatic. Without ideal, Einstein might always teach physics; however, without pragmatism to demonstrate his assumption with mathematical method, he might be viewed as a psychopath because of his abstruse ideas. To a political, in possess of the two inspirit is especially important. Deng Xiaoping, the architect of China's reform and opening-up, on one hand, is a pragmatist with his great contributing to solving certain political issues and enhancing the economy development, and on the other hand, is an idealist as he issued the policy of "One country, two systems" and the "One child" policy. We can safely draw the conclusion that Deng's greatness is rooted in the coexistence of those two inspirits.
