"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

According to the title statement, all faculties at the college and university should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. While I agree that whether college faculty should also work outside academic depends primarily on the specific academic area. With respect to fields in which outside work is appropriate, working experience in relevant professions enables college and university faculty to offer practical instruction to students.

First, faculties who are actively engaged in their fields come to class with fresh insights and excitement about the issue at hand. As the head of geography department at my university once said (and I paraphrase):"I have been working in a survey group in Xinjiang Province for five years before came to this university for postgraduate study. The working experiences in Xinjiang bring me a lot of practical examples to tell to the students at class; and those experiences make my thinking more critical and practical in academic research." Many other faculties, even postgraduate students, have the same opinions that working experience outside the school greatly influences their further study and research.

Secondly, by keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. For one thing, it is the common sense that many of the companies prefer to employ graduate students who already have practical experience; thus the students who have been working in the professors' practical working group may get more chance to find a job. For another thing, through several practical experiences in the professors' projects related to their courses, the students can choose what they most like as their occupation. Take my undergraduate schoolmates as example; some of them have a short period of internship in the Guangdong Province Atlas publishing company, by the recommend of a practical project of professor at college. At last, three of them found their interest in that work and signed up with the company; while the other three didn’t like the work and went to another kind of jobs. Therefore, the professors’ outside academic working do help the students get better career in related fields.

Last but not least, experience in the field can help a professor ferret out cutting-edge and controversial issues—which might be appropriate subjects for research and publication. For example, the professor I mentioned above has prompted several research papers about the problems he found during his working in Xinjiang. And in many other application fields, such as the computer engineering and civil engineering, it always is the same situations.

Admittedly, in some disciplines, it may be either unavailable or unnecessary to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields. In certain academic area there is no profession to speak of out academia. This is especially true in the historic literacy; what work outside academic could they do? Other academic areas alike are theory mathematics and philosophy. For another thing, some of the professors’ academic duties typically involve practical works of the sort that occurs outside the academia. This is especially true in the applied computer science, where the faculty engage mainly in the practical program project serving for the society.

In conclusion, aside from certain academic areas in which outside work is either unavailable or unnecessary, the faculty at college and university should enrich their careers by interspersing field work with academic work.

总的来说这是一篇不错的作文,但是展开深度不够,而且还是选择一边倒的写法…个人建议第三点改成让步好一些,这样可以用广度弥补深度的缺陷~还有就是表达上如果自己拿不准的话尽量少用复杂句~完毕~纯属个人意见~
