1. What is the purpose of your trip to China in September?

# A3 S& @, Z, a4 v* POur office believes in making sure that we learn who the students are beyond the paper application, so we make every effort to visit schools, both international and local high schools. We also want to make sure we understand the institution they are coming from and the cultural environment they grew up in. And of course, there is also the added pleasure of being able to meet the students, their families, and colleagues in the schools on a personal level. The only way to accomplish all this is to set foot in China and visit the schools and conduct interviews and presentations during the visit.

2. What kinds of students are you looking for?

3 ~  V2 d( D, Y7 L2 AThis is often the hardest question for me to answer because there is no cookie-cutter type of student we are looking for. Certainly we are looking for academically motivated students because we want to ensure that they thrive in our challenging academic environment. At the same time, we also want to enroll students who have done amazing things outside of the classroom, whether that's in the arts, humanities, or elsewhere. In addition, we are always looking for students who know Mount Holyoke College and will value a unique educational environment like MHC, an institution that believes women can and should make a difference in the world. So in short, we are looking for young women who can contribute to our community, and who will take advantage of all that Mount Holyoke has to offer.

3. What are some typical mistakes Chinese applicants make in their application?

' k% ~7 N0 [% ]) r) p1) The number of extraneous items that are sent as part of the application can sometimes have a negative effect on an application. In our office, we are very lucky in that we are able to read every piece of paper in an applicant's folder. However, it's a little daunting when the folder is several inches thick. We do accept things like art portfolios, or music CDs that showcase their artistic accomplishments, but we really do not need extra photos of hobbies and activities. In fact, it's sometimes better to key in on the REQUIRED items of the application instead of trying to stuff the application with fillers; we would rather have our applicants focus on making full use of the essays to convey who they are as a person and what they are passionate about.

2) Speaking of essays, proof read your essays! Granted, English is a second language for our Chinese applicants so we do expect to see grammatical errors, but silly mistakes like having "Wellesley College" in your personal statement does not speak well of how much the applicant really wants to be at MHC.

3 I% D! X7 A% y0 T# T4. Will a Chinese applicant with an overseas background have any advantage over other Chinese applicants?

No. Being well traveled will mean you might adjust to life at Mount Holyoke College better than other international students, but it does not affect how we read an application, and especially not the decision. What could influence a reader like myself is what that student did on her overseas trip. Did she volunteer for two months during the summer in South Africa? Did she spend two weeks helping to build a community house in Panama? Those would have an impact on her application.

& a$ |: T: C' m7 q) F5 d0 p5. Chinese students sometimes lack a clear understanding of which US colleges suit them best. Do you have any advice on how they should go about selecting colleges?

The internet has made researching colleges and universities so much easier! My biggest advice is to not rely solely on rankings to lead the college/university search. Use the rankings as a starter point, and then follow that with visits to the institution's website. Have in mind the basic criteria of your ideal college/university: financial aid, student population size, location, academic interest, etc, whatever you think is important. Once you think you know the school well enough, get in touch with a current student and ask them what it's really like to be a student at that school. Ask them about the food, the dorm rooms, the lectures, etc. In other words, get the REAL DEAL on what's going on in that school.
