& @/ ~& z- {, {* B+ h9 Y' BWesleyan University is a private liberal arts college located in Middletown, Connecticut. Wesleyan has traditionally focused on the liberal arts and also has a history of curricular innovations that continues today with renewed commitments to science and international studies.! |3 J% A# V$ J; \

" s. A* q0 j1 y- N1 a* TI would like to meet with prospective students and counselors to provide information about Wesleyan's resources, offerings and atmosphere in order to encourage good students to apply. Students can gain a lot of information simply by reviewing websites and reading articles or other publications, but a face to face meeting is often more inspirational, supportive and helpful. I also learn a lot on my travels, about schools systems, individual schools, developing trends, etc., that is helpful to me when evaluating candidates. It's also important to develop relationships with counselors. The network of advisors is mutually beneficial. I expect to meet some of our alumni in China as well - always fun and informative!

2. What kinds of students are you looking for?
* X D4 R5 m/ E) _$ X+ ?
' ?9 D6 M" a4 MWe're looking for students who excel in and out of the classroom, ones who are curious and not simply working hard to LOOK good. We'd like to see thoughtful, other-oriented people applying to join our Wesleyan community. Although there is much that is common between the U.S. and China, it would also be wonderful to enroll Chinese students who are interested in understanding/explaining their background and investigating aspects of U.S. culture. 9 X$ N9 P9 f7 F! d$ L: e/ U+ Z
# r% g: k1 D1 A0 p' A3. What are some typical mistakes Chinese applicants make in their application?
$ w8 j0 j' Y; J) @0 y) W0 I) y4 k9 ~4 a( q/ M
Chinese applicants sometimes assume we expect to see a perfect record so they work too hard to make themselves seem perfect. A questioning, developing student can be very appealing; an ultra competitive, "cut throat" type of applicant is not so appealing. Also, don't second guess what we're looking for. Be yourself. ! 4. Will a Chinese applicant with an overseas background have any advantage over other Chinese applicants?
/ o& [& n0 a1 h( ?) [( x" S5 |4 j* ~. \8 A" ^ n
To the extent that Chinese students who have had experience overseas might have better English language skills or have a better sense of how different education systems work, those students may have an easier time negotiating the application process. However, students who have lived abroad are not favored in the selection process. In fact, candidates for the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship who are currently studying in China are given preference. ' j$ R J9 N3 R2 }5 [( R

5. Chinese students sometimes lack a clear understanding of which US colleges suit them best. Do you have any advice on how they should go about selecting colleges?
: G. b- J3 G2 m! Y# T" @9 a2 `8 W+ S/ \" r5 M
Think about situations in which you've been most productive and happy. Big/small, urban/rural, being the "best" vs. working hard to "catch up," climate, expectation for involvement beyond classes, etc. all differ from institution to institution. Don't just look at the rankings!!!! (If you do, be sure you understand how those rankings are computed and where the formula may be misleading.)
