The controversy, general learning versus vocational or professional study, has lasted for a long time. Especially when we stepped into the industrial society, more and more people argue that there should be a change in the course of high school, college and university to make it more practical. However, I definitely believe that the general subjects have their own values and can benefit modern people a lot. I will demonstrate my viewpoints in the following passage.

For one thing, general knowledge is essential for the object of education, a thorough cultivation for the human mind. In ancient Greece, philosopher Plato thought the superior and most complete education should be made up by seven arts, such as the subject of music, astronomy, mathematics, and rhetoric. He believed that general education of the students can exercise their mind and help them to understand the reason of the world. Since Plato, general education has been the core curriculum of western education. Supposing a student without the learning of general subjects, how could he think clearly and coherently? How could he express his idea fluently and effectively?

Furthermore, there are a large amount of practical utilities in the learning of general subjects as well. Though the general knowledge probably can not be directly used in the daily life, it is the foundation of professional and vocational learning. Take the learning of economics for example, if the students have taken the courses of mathematics, sociology, and some other general subjects before, they can understand the principles and rules of economics much better.

What is more, the learning of general subjects also can benefit for the career development of students. The exercise of brain and mind from the general education can make students know themselves well. They can easily establish their aim of life, and make all of effort to achieve it. For instance, many leaders in the world, not only in the politics and commerce, but also in the field of art and culture, have the background of general learning. When asked with the causes of their success, most of them would attribute to the broad knowledge.

As the reasons above, we can safely come to the conclusion that we should not reduce the study of general subjects in the education.
