01/13/08:netIn some high schools and universities. the students have group works, giving the members of a group the same grade(credit), do you think it can evaluate the students?
Giving the members of a group the same grade, or access them individually, which method is better? People may hold various opinions on this, however, in my point of view, I agree that people should be evaluated individually.
One compelling reason support my point is that it is not fair to give everybody of a group the same grade. Members in the same group usually do not contribute the same effort to the group, some persons spend more time and energy on group work, others spend much less effort on the task. Recent research provides one explanation of this phenomena that people are divided into two types:motivated and unmotivated. Generally, the motivated ones are more likely to play a core role in the group work; they spend time on determining the thesis, distributing the assignment to others, analysing data collected from library or field trip by themselves and other members, and organizing the whole group in various aspects . While the unmotivated ones always wait for the task distribution. In sum, that members in the same group give the same credit is not a fair evaluation criteria.
An additional reason is that to a large extent giving the members of a group the same credit serves as a assistant of lazy and irresponsible.
For instance, once my friend Jack needed to finish a group work with other two classmates. However his classmates always found excuses in order to absence for group meeting, or did not finish their assignments, they depended on Jack to finish the group work because they knew Jack cared very much about the GPA, and would finish the job very well. Therefore Jack spent a lot of time in library and the Internet in order to finish not only his assignment, but also most of his classmates’, while the other two students only did quite a few work. One solution about the problem is that members of the same group should be assessed by individual as well as the whole group’s performance, which is a better method to cultivate students ability to finish their job independently, and the spirit of team work and cooperation.
In clnclusion, giving the memebers of a group the same grade is not a sound evaluation criteria, not just because it is so unfair, but rather that it stimulates the lazy and irresponsible, which is something definitely not the purpose of a group work.
