ISSUE 51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defined the purpose of education----learning to know, learning to do, learning to get together, and learning to be-----at the Paris conference in 1996. According to my understanding, the destination that requires the education system and approaches to meet the individual needs and interests of each student does not accord with our real education purpose. Merely meeting the needs and interests of the individuals is far from being effective education.
First and foremost of all, the real purpose of meeting the individual requirement and everyone’s hobbies is exciting one to human beings, society, and future. Admittedly, interest is the foundation which one student relies to learn the knowledge and skills effectively. However, because many interests of students are whims which can not last long and without any destination and plan, whether they could persist on is really suspicious. In addition, even if they could learn by interests, they should be induced by guiders, since their aimless leads to the non-system of the procedures of studying. At last, unless the students could differentiate the right and wrong, educators should not allow the students to do anything they want.
Absolutely, to meet everyone’s interests does not adapt to corporation which the society demands. The destination of education is not only to let children learn some skills and knowledge, but also to encourage them to get along well with others. If everyone only concerned with their own hobbies, how could they understand the meaning of teamwork, interpersonal skills, interdependence, and leadership? In modern society, no longer can a person who is steeped with knowledge in one field accomplish a job. It needs lots of people from all kinds of fields to buildup a team. If one examines the business world for example, it becomes clear that productivity depends on the ability of coworkers to cooperate as members of a team. Cooperative interaction is even essential in jobs performed in relative isolation and in jobs in which technical knowledge or ability, not the ability to work with others, seem to be most important.
In addition, the education focus on the interests could not let the students know how to learn to be a good person, especially the primary education and the secondary education. Morality seems the most important purpose in this era. To significant extent the kind of education students receive in the elementary school and middle school determines what kind of person they will be.
However, we could not deny the effect of interests. If the specific needs and interests of every student is taken into account the education system, the students will fully develop their distinct potential and talent. In such an educational system, students, feeling centered and appreciated, will be more motivated to study.
To sum up, though the interests are the most effective teacher, education could not be specifically designed to meet it. And it also could not make the education truly effective.
